*All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc. The default settings of each program were not used, in order for each program to achieve its maximum detection rate. Because of this, there is a possibility for the tested programs to detect a few false positives.
*The 147184 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, Nod32, Dr.Web, BitDefender and McAfee antivirus programs. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus program detected it as a new virus.
*ALL virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept were the ones that were packed using external-dos-packers (that means not winzip, winrar, winace etc).
*The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program (Renexts) and were unique, according to checksum32 filesize.
*Most of the virus samples used were not previously replicated at the time the test was made, which means that some of them, although probably only a few, may be false positives. The procedure of testing each and every virus sample is still under process.
*The programs MKS_VIR , PER and IPArmor were not tested because there was no english demo version available.
*The programs WinAntivirus , Anti-Hacker Expert , Command , Extendia AVK , GDATA AVK , BOClean , VET and Freedom were not tested because there was no demo version available.
* Thorough mode was not used in VBA32 due to extremely slow scan process.
*Advanced heuristics were not used in Tauscan due to extremely slow scan process.
*VirusBuster uses the exact same engine as Vexira.
*TheShield uses the exact same engine as VirobotExpert.
* Avira uses the exact same engine as AntiVir.
*Fire uses the exact same engine as Solo.
*MKS_VIR uses the exact same engine as ArcaVir.
*BullGuard uses the exact same engine as BitDefender free edition.
*The program InVircible did not include a "typical" scanner-function and could not be tested.
*The program V-Catch checks only mail accounts and could not be tested.
*The program PC Tools kept crashing while testing the samples.
*DOS-Based scanners were not tested.

The following file types were used.

SH, ELF, COM, EXE, PL, BAT, PRC, DOC, XLS, BIN, MDB, IMG, PPT, VBS, MSG, VBA, OLE, HTM, INI, SMM, TD0, REG, CLASS,

HTA, JS, VI_, URL, PHP, WMF, HLP, XML, SCR, PIF, SHS, WBT, CSC, MAC, DAT, CLS, STI, INF, HQX, XMI, SIT.

The virus samples were divided into these categories, according to the type of the virus :

*
File = BeOS, FreeBSD, Linux, Mac, Palm, OS2, Unix, BinaryImage, BAS viruses, MenuetOS.
*
MS-DOS = MS-DOS viruses.
*
Windows = Win.*.* viruses.
*
Macro = Macro, Multi and Formula viruses.
*
Malware = Adware, DoS, Constructors, Exploit, Flooders, Nukers, Sniffers, SpamTools, Spoofers, Virus Construction Tools, Droppers, PolyEngines.
*
Script = ABAP, BAT, Corel, HTML, Java, Scripts, MSH, VBS, WBS, Worms, PHP, Perl, Ruby viruses.
*
Trojans-Backdoors = Trojan and Backdoor viruses.

Installed just before an image restoration just to see. Didn't play with it much. Wasn't terribly slow as I expected from a Norton product. I would be using it if it was natively 64bit. But it isn't. Too bad.

If you really want something for free (it is same as Kaspersky, but marketed by AOL and is completely free), get Active Virus Shield from http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp? Remember it doesn't work on Vista.

I was using 32bit.
Even right now, I have NOD32's File System Monitor Offline. I only turn it on when I'm downloading a crack or whenever someone else comes with a flash drive or a hard drive. IDM and Messenger downloads are always scanned using NOD32 even when the resident shield is turned off. This is more than enough for me ;)

I wasn't talking in terms of protection. I don't think Norton's virus protection is bad. It's fine. Just that, Symantec includes a lot of bloat with Norton.

================================================== =======

Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 is a fully integrated security solution that combines reactive detection methods with the latest proactive technologies, protecting your PC from viruses, hacker attacks, spam and spyware. Seamless integration of all product components (including a personal firewall) eliminates system conflicts and provides fast performance.

What's New

Unified line of defense. Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 processes all incoming and outgoing data on your computer, including email, Internet traffic and network interaction, without the need for additional security applications.

Compatibility. A major advantage of Kaspersky Internet Security is that it is fully compatible with operating systems from the Microsoft Windows family and interacts well with Microsoft Windows XP Security Center. The program has been optimized for use on laptops based on Intel Centrino mobile technology, and for use on computers with Intel processors that support Hyper-Threading technology.

Simplicity and Convenience. The configuration wizard helps you choose the optimal program operation mode. Antivirus database and program updates are automatic. Moreover, the context sensitive help function enables you to quickly understand the finer points of the productís settings.

Features
Protection from viruses

Email protection. Internet Security 6.0 scans email traffic for viruses according to the protocol via which it is sent (POP3, IMAP and NNTP for incoming mail and SMTP for outgoing mail) on any mail program. We also offer plug-ins and treatment for viruses in Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express mail databases.

Scanning of Internet traffic. All HTTP Internet traffic is scanned for viruses in real-time, ensuring that infected objects are not saved to the computerís hard disk. Statistics about harmful scripts can be accessed using a plug-in for Microsoft Internet Explorer.

File system protection. Individual files, catalogues and disks can be designated for antivirus scanning. Users can limit antivirus scanning to critical areas of the operating system and startup objects to ensure that attention is focused on the most vulnerable areas of the system.

Proactive protection. Kaspersky Internet Security monitors program activity and all processes launched in RAM. It notifies users of dangerous, suspicious or hidden processes (that is, rootkits), prevents harmful changes to the file system and restores the system after malicious activity.
Protection from spyware

Secures confidential information. Internet Security 6.0 prevents confidential information (such as passwords, bank account numbers and credit card details) being stolen from your computer. It detects phishing messages and disables links to phishing sites.

Safe Internet surfing. Internet Security 6.0 prevents dangerous scripts from being launched on websites, and blocks popup windows and advertising banners.

Blocks automatic dial up programs. Any unauthorized attempts to dial up premium-rate telephone services from your modem are blocked.
Protection from hackers

Blocks network attacks. Intrusion detection system monitors any network activity that has the characteristics of a hacker attack. The personal firewall program prevents hacker attacks by blocking connections from the hackerís computer with a high security, customizable personal firewall.

Full control over network activity. This anti-hacker or personal firewall program controls all requests from applications to websites, in accordance with the program rules that have been set, and tracks all incoming and outgoing data packages.

Safety on all networks. When a computer connects to a network, the program asks you to specify the type of network (a trusted network, Intranet or the Internet), so that the firewall can choose how strict the rules should be.

Stealth mode. This personal firewall technology makes the computer invisible to outside users, effectively preventing all types of DoS (Denial of Service) attacks.
Protection from spam

Integrated protection from spam. Several methods are used in combination to ensure the highest possible level of spam detection, including blacklists and whitelists of IP addresses and word combinations typical of spam together with self-learning algorithms. The program also scans graphic images for spam attributes.

Support for common mail programs. An expansion module, specifically designed for Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express, enables you to set processing rules for messages according to their post-analysis status.

Preliminary analysis of messages. To economize time and network traffic, the Mail Manager conducts preliminary analyses of message headings in all incoming email before downloading them from the mail server. This also reduces the risk of spam and viruses being downloaded to your computer.

AVG's can not be called crap because it's completely free.
But it's detection rates aren't enough to gain a respectable place among giants of the industry.
And of course it has the one of the kinkiest Graphical interfaces I've ever seen among AV products.

With my knowledge and other resources.
Best Ones are : Kaspersky, BitDefender and NOD32
