Not necessarily.
You can try O&O Disk Recovery. It might work.

It's a tedious thing though. 500GB will take hours!!!

Yeah. I don't think he will be able to recover all of it. Besides, he needs the same amount of disk space on another drive or a partition to recover them - even if the program could recover all of them (provided that he didn't do anything since the format)

I dont think he needs the same amount of disk space on another drive or a partition , and i guess he cud just unformat the whole partition thru sm s/w like Partion Magic, I hav seen such a feature in sm s/w............. m8 be Partition Magic.... :D

I think that's if you lost a partition (i.e. partition table entries). That has happened to me once, and using Disk Director, I could recover the whole partition.

But if you formatted a partition, the files are equivalent to been deleted (but in mass scale), you still need another partition to recover those files to. This might not be 100% accurate info, but this is what I understand logically.

The ones I checked seems to be recovering to another partition or even another drive. They don't seem to be capable of restoring, not recovering a formatted partition/drive.

Couple of days ago, I lost some of my files because of a stupid mistake. I stopped everything I was doing, to prevent overwriting those files. Then I installed O&O UnErase and tried to recover them. It couldn't recover all of them. :oo: Well, I couldn't do that anyway because I didn't have enough space in other partitions.

Deleting a file (file A) doesn't zero the bits on disk corresponding to A. It only removes the connection with the file allocation table. If the connection can be restored, A can be recovered, provided that the bits of A are not replaced by bit of a new file/files, which was/were copied to that partition after deleting A.

Hope you understood that :D

I'll tell u a way to do.This needs a good memory of the past and lots of patience and hope.
remove every task frm ur HDD which lost data(i.e. pagefile)
U hav to remember the partition sizes u had b4 exactly.and the partition FS es.Usually this comes NTFS.(If its FAT we r lucky.FAT has less security--->easy to recover)
Format ur HDD with the exact primary, secondry partitions with exact sizes and FSes.
Now u hav to use a recovery software.I recommend mostly Get Data Back by Runtimesoftware. Its 2.14 NTFS is available with crack.Get it frm a warez site.Usually other softwares didnt supported for this trick while I tried. If u like try them too.
Plugin a extra HDDS,Flash drives to make space for the largest partition to recover.
Start recovering. This will take some time. But dont worry.98% of files will be recovered correctly. In your case If done correctly It will be 490GB.

If u dont set the partition sizes correctly still some data would be recovered. But will loose the Files which had their IDs on the lost clusters frm the partition. But still u can get about 100GB data.

Hope u will recover ur files anyhow.Best of luck.
U can do it 2morrow coz from 6.05 u dont hav to do anywork ne.

Although all files cannot be recovered i could recover about 40% of my files.this depends on rewriting to the disk
