Sony's 11-inch OLED display

At a display forum in Tokyo this week, Sony showed off a prototype of an 11-inch screen that uses OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology. The electronics giant plans to begin selling ultrathin TVs using the screens sometime this year, the Reuters news agency reported from this week's event. That would be ahead of the tentative timetable described by Sony CEO Howard Stringer earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The company declined to give unit targets or pricing, but said the OLED TV would be built by ST Liquid Crystal Display, a joint venture between Sony and Toyota Industries.

The prototype comes in white as well as black. One of the big attractions of OLED technology is the brightness of the colors, along with the potential for energy savings and sleek, thin devices. (OLEDs don't require backlighting.) Some very small OLED screens--in the 2.5-inch range--are already in use in cameras and cell phones. Mass manufacturing could be a challenge, but Sony's not alone in trying out the technology; Matsushita (aka Panasonic in the U.S.), Samsung and Toshiba also are looking into OLEDs.

The Sony screens were a hit at the Tokyo display forum. Given the costs of production, OLED TVs probably would catch on first with gadget enthusiasts who scoff at price tags. "OLED sets are very expensive, and we mean to begin first by marketing the TVs as a status symbol," said Kazuhiro Imai, a senior manager in Sony's TV and Video business group, according to Reuters. "We will see where the business goes from there."
