Microsoft continues to modify "Viridian," a move that will delay the first public beta of the software

Microsoft officially confirmed that the first public beta of Windows Server virtualization -- code-named Viridian -- has been delayed until the second half of 2007. Analysts and users initially expected the beta to be released sometime in the first part of 2007. The delay was confirmed by Microsoft's Mike Neil, general manager for virtualization strategy.

Viridian is scheduled to be released within 180 days of the Windows Server "Longhorn" release (http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/archive/2007/04/12/Viridian-and-Virtual-Server-Timing-Updates.aspx), which is scheduled for beta 3 sometime in June 2007. The main reason for the delay is due to performance and scalability changes that are being done by developers. "We're designing Windows Server virtualization to scale up to 64 processors, which I'm proud to say is something no other vendor's product supports," Neil said.

The Service Pack 1 for Virtual Server 2005 R2 is expected to be released sometime during the second quarter. "In the interim, customers and partners can download a Release Candidate (RC) version later this month - this is code complete and an update to the current beta 2," said Neil.

Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 R2, the company's existing server virtualization software, creates a virtual machine within the host operating system, which makes it slower than technologies currently used by VMware, Viridian and Xen.
