Intel has a new DRAM replacement, PRAM, which they're showing off next Tuesday at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing. Nonvolatile like flash or spinning disks, PRAM stays alive when the power is killed, and Intel hopes to get read/write speeds up to the point where it might compete with standard DDR sticks.

PRAM is made from "chalcogenide glass," a strange matter whose resistance can be locally altered by the heat generated by electrical currents, allowing them to permanently hold information until later re-altered. And if it's too slow to beat standard memory, Flash better watch out: PRAM might have an effectively infinite lifespan.

While this stiff might one day be manufactured in China, it won't be developed there. While local engineers are working on parallel programming and terascale, according to CNET, its R&D effort is moving east at a much slower pace than its production plants.
Keep the innovation aside; they better work at least at the speed of current DDR speeds :frown: :yes:
