Maybe his ADSL router got confused with something and made the handshake with the NIC in 1Gbps speed :D

Yeah, mine has 1Gbps LAN, but my ADSL modem can't handle that speed. It can only handle 100Mbps. When I set to 1Gbps, it doesn't work.
