http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w224/anushand/fp__Ubuntu.pngUbuntu will officially be the first Linux distribution offered by Dell
Once Dell confirmed that it would offer the Linux operating system on select PCs in the future, Linux enthusiasts anxiously awaited the announcement of which Linux distributions would be offered. Dell today announced that it would preinstall the Ubuntu operating system on some PC and notebook models.
Canoncial, the lead sponsor behind the Ubuntu project, has started working on the operating system to ensure that it will properly work on Dell PCs and notebooks. "Dell are going to work with us to make sure Ubuntu works fully on its hardware," said Chris Keynon, director of business development for Ubuntu.
Along with appealing to popular demand, the computer company will likely save money by stripping out the cost of purchasing the operating system license from Microsoft. It appears that OS support would be provided by the open source and Linux communities, while Dell would exclusively provide hardware support.
Michael Dell previously disclosed that he has Ubuntu installed on his personal laptop.
Dell has not announced models, configurations or prices of PCs and notebooks that will feature Ubuntu. Dell also did not eliminate the possibility of other Linux distributions being installed on future product lines.
Linux fans hope that Dell embracing Linux will begin a shift in which more PC vendors will switch to open source technology.

I think this is a huge loss for Apple. Apple had the chance to be "the" alternative OS by allowing Dell and HP to load OS X on their machines, but now that place is about to be usurped by Ubuntu Linux.
Yeah, yeah, Apple says it's a hardware company first. Blah, blah, blah. They're just selling repackaged pretty PCs that happen to run a very nice OS. If they just let someone else build the Mac/PCs to their specs and kept their own branded hardware at a premium, they could have made a killing selling just the OS. There's this one company that did that, Micro-something or other...
Oh well, sounds like Ubuntu has a bright future ahead of it. :)

WRONG! OpenGL is better dan DirectX [R]
y?
OpenGL's concepts r understandable by all..so simple
OpenGL supports NO business therefore they dont hav updates when new hardware comes out -dey hav only real software updates
Dey Do NOT favour ny kinda GPU type[etc nVidia, ATI..]
--guess wht microsoft's own support for directx 9 in VB6 is lower dan OpenGL's support for the same programin lang.[i hav personal experience]
dats y i used OpenGL wen developin ma calc

**WINE's gaming port has now successfully ported Max Payne II and sum othr games to Linux--OpenGL handles evrything n more dat directX handled

OpenGL is better than DirectX.IMHO.ppl think direct X is better coz
1.Many use that.
2.ATI dont knw how to write drivers for OpenGL.
3.nVidia writes drivers only to surpass ATIs and hang on with MS.

I only care the quality (effects) and performance.
DX9 doesn't sped up things, but allows more effects on the same hardware.

back to the main topic :
I not much of an Ubuntu fan I would prefer if Dell made Debian to be their choice of Linux or simply support all linux version by offering the main board and peripheral whitepapers for free so that all linux disro maintainers can create the drivers for their distro
Anusha
05-02-2007, 10:58 PM
Well, I don't really care what DELL does because I might never buy a DELL PC ever. If I buy one, it will be a lappie. Ubuntu on a Laptop is cool, because laptops generally are not meant for gaming.

Now this is the problem.
In Linux, either a game doesn't run at all, or when you finally somehow get it to work, you could have finished it 10 times in Windows.

when something runs in linux it runs. low memory usage, more throughput... don't get stuck... etc added benifits.
all this trial and error things are there casue these people who develop the games don't support linux. and thats there fault and not linux's fault.

The OS a person wants to use is his/her choice. If his/her choice is good enough for his/her work, then fine. Linux can't provide what I want. If you are saying that you can emulate Windows software and work them in Linux (WINE or whatever mechanism it is), that's not good enough (for me). Still, it's running in an environment they are not supposed to run - that's my feeling. If one is fine with that, I don't care. Hell, I don't like running 32bit software in 64bit environment either. But that's unavoidable in both Linux and Windows.
I'm not saying Linux is totally crap. There are certain things that I would like to see in Windows. But those features alone can't make it better than Windows for what I expect from a system.
