Intel is soon to release its next-generation platform for laptop, namely Santa Rosa, on May 6 with stronger competitive features. AMD is not just waiting to being defeated. Instead, AMD plans to release a faster model called Turion 64 X2 TL-66, on the same time slashes it price against Intel’s Santa Rosa.
AMD Dual-Core Turion will benefit 65nm fabrication technology starting from this quarter, lowering the cost on a mean while boosting up the clock speed at the same thermal envelope. Because of this reason, AMD is going to launch a new model, namely Turion TL-66. Featuring 2.3 GHz clock speed, the processor contains 512KB x 2 L2 Cache and supports DDR2-800 dual channel memory module, while its TDP remains at 35W.
In addition to the new high speed model, 4 of the existing 90nm Turion X2 will start fabricating in 65nm. They include: Turion64 X2 TL-64 (2.2GHz/512KB L2 x 2/35W TDP), TL-60(2.0GHz/512KB L2 x2/31W TDP), TL-58(1.9GHz/512KB L2 x2/31W TDP), and TL-56(1.8GHz/512KB L2 x2/31W TDP). Besides the change in fabrication process, these models also feature an upgrade to DDR2-800 dual channel memory module support and a lower TDP at 31W.
To be ready to complete with Intel Santa Rosa, our source told us AMD is currently planning a big price cut and a chipset Bundle promotion program. Market analyst generally believes that AMD’s laptop processor remains weak in sales until the launch of next-generation Griffin in early 2008. Since there is no more new model to be released after TL-66 in this year, perhaps price cut is the last weapon AMD could resist the invasion from Santa Rosa.
