Former South African coach Ray Jennings has declined an offer to coach the Bangladesh national team, it was learnt here Friday. According to sources close to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the 53-year-old former South African coach was approached immediately after the World Cup to succeed Dave Whatmore but he did not show any interest in leaving South Africa.

Jennings, a fitness fanatic and disciplinarian, started coaching at Gauteng before moving to Easterns and then to South Africa A team. His appointment as South Africa’s senior team coach came in October 2004, surprising many as he had a reputation of speaking too bluntly that had more than once landed him in hot water. The former star wicketkeeper is still regarded by many as the best man to coach the national senior team. However, being a straight-talking man, he has stepped on some sensitive toes. His relation with the South African Cricket Board has improved now and he may be asked to take up some assignment for the national team, added the sources.
