Sri Lanka’s Veteran Opener Sanath Jayasuriaya Approaching 400 One-Day Appearances
Submitted by Sudhakar Shanbhag on Wed, 2007-05-23 12:38.
Sri Lanka’s veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya needs to play eight more one-dayers to become the first international cricketer to make 400 one-day appearances.
India’s Sachin Tendulkar is behind the Lankan and has played 384 one-day games so far.
At the end of the Abu Dhabi series, which Sri Lanka lost 1-2 to Pakistan, Jayasuriya's stats stood at 392 ODIs.
The 37-year-old Matara batsman has so far amassed 12025 runs in one-day cricket and has smacked 25 one-day centuries, second only to Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar’s 41 tons.
Jayasuriya’s hightest individual one-day score is 189 achieved against India in the finals of Sharjah series in 2000.
Besides being a devastating batsman, Jayasuriya also has an uncanny ability to run through the sides on his day with his innocuous left arm spin.
His best bowing performance in one-dayers remains 6 for 29 and with age not proving to be hindrance, the left hander has many more seasons left in him to entertain his fans and followers world wide.
