ICC Champions trophy is due to start next month, and the annual ICC cricket awards will be presented during the tournement. Today, the press reported Mahela Jayawardena is a top contender for the ICC player of the year and best captain of the year.
Dravid and Ponting are the other top contenders for these awards. ICC Cricket awards was held only 2 times previously, but Sri Lankan players couldn't make it to the top awards, other than being selected to the ICC test and ODI teams of the year.
But, this year our players have a better chances of grabbing few awards with players like Murali, Sangakkara, and Upul Tharanga are nominated for top awards in the ceromony.
The awards, covering performances from August 1, 2005 to August 8, 2006, will be presented on October 23 in Mumbai during the Champions Trophy tournament.
Nominations were made by few past masters of International Cricket, including Sunil Gavaskar and our own Arjuna Ranatunga.
The final selection will be voted by a 56-member ICC academy comprising the 10 Test captains, 18 members of the umpires and match referees panel and 28 legends of the game and members of the media.
