Help! CPU Over-Heating

My System is P4 2.24 GHz, Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-8VM533.

Typical CPU Temperature is around 40-50 C (with no programs loaded, just windows)
But when few programs are loaded the Temperature rises to 70-80 C.
If I try to do a Video Encoding, The Temperature rises to 90-100 C and the system gets stuck. This also happens when I use a program that uses a lot of graphics.

The CPU fan is working (3000-3500 RPM), but the CPU isn't cooling enough.
Do I need to replace the fan.
Will putting a separate cooling fan help (and can someone tell me exactly how to put a separate fan).
Or is there any other way to keep the CPU Temperature down?

Machan u wont blv me i had da same problem with my computer and u know why it happened??? Bcoz some stupid punk ass to whom i gave my computer to get it cleaned have removed da wire which powers up da CPU fan! Ass Hole! He He!

Machan what u should first is (This might sound crazy 2 u!!) remove da CPU casing and see whether da FAN is working properly. Then clear all da dust from da Fan! Having dust might cause trouble. If they do not work probably u r prob is with da Processor it self! If it keeps over heating i dnt think its a good idea 2 keep working! Bocz u might not only ur processor but other stuff 2! So take it 2 da place where u bought it and tel them da problem! If its under warranty period they will more than happy to replace it!!!

I checked the CPU fan and its working properly. My warranty period is over. Is there anything that I could do to solve the problem?

Machan then what u should do is anyway go to da place where u bought it and try 2 get it repaired! U will hav 2 pay them coz ya warranty period is over! But paying is better than getting ya whole com in to trouble! Do u experience this problem from a long time or after installation of a new software or hardware device?

Well!! Here are some things you can do... You said your fans work ne... So mmm... If there are a lot dust in your heat sink, just clean 'em and see... Or.. maybe your heat sink paste is not effective... Use a good one.... (If you find Arctic Silver - AS5 - Please do tell me where you got it)... Or... try using a system fan... It might cool things down a bit....

I haven't installed any devices lately. I had the problem for a few months now. I tried
formatting the computer and installing windows again, but it didn't help.

other than that u can temporarily remove da casing n expose it to a bigger fan.. as in a table fan.

dude, jst put on a new fan. u may need da socket number wen buying a new fan

Normally these problems occur when you dont clean dust inside you CPU (casing actually)

If you know how to assemble and disassemble your comp , clean all the dust in your comp very carefully, assemble the required parts, and try


or some times the prob may remain with your fan , although the comp shows that your fan is working at 3000 rpm , it may not. (you cant tell it by just watching at it)


If you havent OC your PC , most probably the problem is with your Mother board.

and check the Powersupply too
and add another casing fan

Yep... a temp of 90C - 100C is way too high for a processor's limits.... reading the posts in which u've said that the CPU Fan is working properly, i think that the problem is in the Thermal grease (a.k.a. Thermal Paste), which is sandwiched between the Processor & the Heat Sink... maybe the paste hav dried up n the heat isn't been transfered to the sink from the processor fast enough.... pls chk it up....

that temperature is too high man,it'll burn your processor.use a large casing so that it has good air flow inside and check the holes in your casing for dust.try applying some thick thermal paste....
