D. S. Senanyake College is one of the premiere educational institutes in Sri Lanka. It was established on the 10th of February, 1967 under the stewardship of R.I.T Alles. During its comparatively short history it has become one of the most prestigious and sought after schools in the country. A truly multi-ethnic, multi-religious college, has a track record of excellence in Academia, Sport and Community Leadership.

DSSC believes in creating well rounded individuals. Numerous student associations, sports and other activities supplement the core academic activities. Education @ DSSC

D.S Senanayake College provides education to Students from Grade 1 to 13 in Sinhala & Tamil Mediums. About the College

Today, D.S Senanayake College has become one of the Pioneer Education centers of Sri Lanka.With a Student Population of over 5000 & a dedicated Staff of over 200 Teachers, DSSC is a force to reckon with. There are many achievements of excellence both in the Academic & the Non academic Field we have fostered some of the best educational & sporting prospects of this country.

D.S Senanayake College provides education to Students from Grade 1 to 13 in both Sinhala, Tamil & English Mediums. It also provides English Medium studies in Mathematics, Science & Commerce fields for the Advance Level Examinations. The School is fully equipped with Modern Classrooms, Multiple Science Laboratories and Computer Laboratories, Ground & Sports Complex for sports activities. It also has more than 35 Clubs, Societies & Associations engaged in all types of Co curricular activities. There is also a wide range of sporting activities be it the Track, Field or Swimming Pool.

But the most wonderful side of this tale is the success of D.S Senanayake College is that the rapid growth of this establishment in such a short period of 35 years. It was the sole commitment of the Administration of the School, Teachers, Parents and Students & the Old Boys working together to achieve a common goal. Their path was always not cleared. It was a harsh climb to the top, with a lot of sweat, blood & tears in the path that we walked by. Because as our founding Principal Mr. R I T Alles says " D.S was not built of the pocket of the rich man, but of the hand of the humble poor man."

We at DS are all brothers, regardless of race, cast or creed. The blood which bonds us together is this School that has brought us together. The brotherhood of the D.S Senanayake College will always be there to carry the sprit of DS forward, under the Black & Gold banner when they say …

D S Senanayake College History

The need to educate Children by admitting them into Schools of high standard grew daily. In 1965 the unlimited number of requests to admit children into the Royal College Primary was amazing. By 1966 this problem became more arrogant. Under these circumstances that Minister of Education Hon I M R A Iriyagolla took the initiative to build a new school in Cinnamon Gardens immediately.

Mr. M J Perera, Secretary to the minister who was in charge of finding suitable land was able to locate an empty block of land by Gregory's Road that was formerly used by the Navy. Permission to occupy the land was granted to the Ministry of Education by the Ministry of Defense & the Municipal committee of the area. Thus, plans were made to start the new school immediately.

The construction of a building to insert the first batch of students was undertaken by the State Engineering Corporation under Professor A N S Kulasinghe.All the expense were beared by the Ministry of Education.

Mr. R I T Alles, a teacher of Royal College was chosen to become the Head Teacher of the new school. Mr. Bogoda Premarathne, Principal of royal College released him with his blessings for the venture. Furthermore, the Cadet Group of Royal College cleared the land area infested with snakes to build the school. The New school building, the backbone of the school was built on the spot that was called "Kumbi Kalei".

About the OBA

First Batch of students left the college in the year 1979 and the OBA was formed thereafter. First President of OBA was Mr. Ranjan Perera presently CEO of soft logic. Comparatively a young OBA yet considered as the most energetic and active OBA in the island. OBA celebrated it’s 25th year in 2005.

Sports

Cricket

The D.S.Senanayake College Cricket Team has been very successful recently. Many fine cricket players have been produced by our school. They include Aravinda de Silva and Hashan Tilakeratne, who were members of the Sri Lankan cricket team that won the 1996 World Cup. They have made their country and school proud of them. Our Cricket Big Match is played against St. Benedict's College. In 1996 the big match was a draw, while the One Day match was won by us.


Rugby

Our School's Rugby Team is one of the best in Colombo. We won the Rugby Big Match with St Benedict's College in 1996r.


Soccer

Our Soccer team became the champions of under 18 MILO National schools soccer tournament in 1996 .


Western Cadet Band

D.S.S.C Western Cadet Band was very successful. We were selected as the All-Island best Cadet Band for 3 consecutive years in 1990 - 92. We were All-Island Runners-Up in the best Cadet Band in 1993 and we are proud to announce that we were the best Cadet Band in Western Province [1996.]


Basketball

Although Basketball was introduced recently, within a short period we became the champions of the National School Games in Basketball. In 1996 we won the A division under-19, under-17 tournaments and were runners up in the under-15 age group.

The Computer Society

This is the most active society in D.S.S.C. Students of all grades are now well versed in computing skills due to the efforts of this society. The Computer Laboratory which was the brainchild of one of the principals Mr. S. Kodikara, has a LAN Network comprising of 20 workstations and a 486 Server. The Society hopes to obtain Internet facilities for the laboratory & equip our students for the next millennium.

The Prefect's Guild

The Prefect's Guild was one of the organs that was responsible for making the College into one of the most disciplined schools in Sri Lanka. The Guild comprises of a Head prefect, Deputy Head prefects, Senior prefects, Junior prefects and Student guides.


The Interact Club

One of the more dynamic clubs in school, Two of our Interactors won awards of excellence in the Youth Camp '96. Our Interactors also succeeded in bringing to our school The Championship trophies for Cricket & Basketball which they won at " Interaction '96 ".We were also the 1st runner-up in the " Interaction Song competition ". Our Interactors were in the organizing committees of "Youth Camp '96 "


English Literary Association

The English Literary Association has excelled in Drama & we have won the championship at the Inter School Shakespeare Drama Competition for two consecutive years in 1993 and 1994.

Top cricketers keep springing from D.S. Senanayake College

D.S. Senanayake College is one school that has produced top class cricketers within a span of three decades. Cricketers of the caliber of Aravinda de Silva, Naveed Nawaz, Pubudu Dissanayake and the present Sri Lanka skipper Hashan Tilekeratne are some of the prominent players that have come out from this institution. They keep on producing and in the recent past Kanchana Gunawardena who is a member of the present team had the honour of leading the Under 15 national side for the junior World Cup in England.

The present captain of DSS, Sudeera de Soysa is the latest addition. He has been selected as a member of the Sri Lanka Under 19 World Cup team which is due to take part in the forthcoming World Cup scheduled to be held next month in Bangladesh. Unfortunately Sudeera due to his national commitments has been unable to lead his school in all of the matches they have played so far.

A fifth year coloursman, Sudeera is a fine all-rounder who is a left hand batsman and a left arm leg spinner. This season he has played in only four matches but has been an inspiration to his team. With his all-round performance, he was responsible for DSS defeating Thurstan outright this season. He won't be able to represent his school for the rest of the season as he has to attend national practices in preparation of the World Cup.

Fourth year coloursman Dinesh de Silva will lead the side for the rest of the season. He is a top order right handed batsman and a right arm pacie who is the opening bowler of the side. So far he has accumulated over 400 runs and taken over 40 wickets. Has played for the Under 17 and 19 provincial team and was a member of the champion team of 2002.

The player to watch will be fifth year coloursman Kanchana Gunawardena a stylish left hand batsman and a right arm off spinner. He has been one of their saviours in most of the matches; he has scored over 450 runs and taken over 25 wickets. He led the Under 15 national side in the year 2000, and was the vice captain of the Under 17 national team that went for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Member of the Under 19 national team at the World Cup held in New Zealand and was the vice captain of the Sri Lanka Under 19 team which toured India last month.

Hard hitter Roshan Kulatunge is the opening batsman of the side. A third year coloursman who has a bright future. A left handed batsman who has scored over 500 runs. Was a member of champion Under 17 team. His partner is another third year player Dilum Harischandra, a right handed batsman has scored over 350 runs so far. Led the Under 16 side two years ago.

The other opening bowler of the side is second year player Madhawa Perera who bowls right arm and has taken over 30 wickets this season. To bolster the score they have two third year players in right handed batsmen Pubudu Perera and Asanka Abeyratne. Pubudu has scored over 350 runs and Asanka over 300 runs. Pubudu led the Under 17 side last year.

Second year player Damith Gunaratne is a right handed middle order batsman and is the wicket keeper of the side who has scored over 250 runs and has over 35 victims to his name. Another second year player Sameepa Sansuma is the first change bowler and a right hand batsman. He has taken over 20 wickets. To support the opening bowlers there is third year player Dasun Perera a fine left arm leg spinner, has been in the wickets and has so far taken over 35 wickets .

Players who are fighting for a place are second year players Upul Samarasinghe, Gayashan Kavindra and Dileepa Liyanage all right handed batsmen, Kanishka Fernando a left arm spinner, Pasan Perera a right arm off spinner and Buddhika Ratnayake the standby wicket keeper.

The team is coached by Sampath Perera who is a old boy of the school who has done a fine job in bringing the side to the top six last season. This season they are confident of maintaining that position. The master in charge is M. Samarakkody who has the full backing of the Principal Asoka Senani Hewage and the Old Boys Association.
