that every Sri Lankan should know these days.
Myth No. 1:“Sinhale started after the arrival of prince Vijaya from North India while Tamils were there in Lanka before him”
This is such a lie and distortion of facts. Archaeological proof clearly shows that Lanka was inhabited by the human as early as 900,000 BC. Since then, there is solid archaeological evidence to prove that Lankans, who called themselves Hela people, were trying very hard to advance themselves into a civilization. Hela as Lanka was known at the time, was in the forefront of human progress in the region.
Dravidians arrived in India only around 7500 BC from somewhere in Mediterranean. Archaeologists have proof that Lankans had an established culture in existence by this time.
Meanwhile the Dravidians merged into the native Indian tribes all over India. When Aryans from the areas around Caspian Sea arrived in North India in 1500 BC, the Dravidians in the north mixed into the stronger Aryan culture. Dravidians survived the Aryan integration in South India as Aryans stopped in North India.
It is quite possible that later on, migrants and visitors arrived from all parts of India to Sri Lanka and vise versa as happens between any two countries. It is fair to say that from this point onwards there must have been some migration of South Indian Dravidians to Lanka as merchants. With them the Dravidian religion Hinduism must have arrived in Lanka just like the way other Indian religions such as Jainism arrived in Lanka. But these were NOT the native religion of the Lankans. Hela people practiced their own religions.
Prince Vijaya who landed in Lanka in 483BC, only took control of one of the towns and then mixed into this Hela civilization. Many such Indian migrants brought their religions to Lanka. Sinhalese ( derived from Sihalese – Sivu Helaya ) didn’t start from Vijaya onwards. Hela was always there in Sri Lanka, from the beginning.
Subsequently, after Sri Lanka became the centre of Buddhism, there were continuous migrations of the North Indian Buddhists from North Indian Aryan Kingdoms to Lanka. All these North Indian migrants, unlike the other migrants such as the ones from the South Indian Dravidian kingdoms, mixed into the Sihalese civilization adopting Sinhalese culture and principles of life. None of these North Indians formed ethnic ghettos in one corner of the island.
The great qualities of the Sinhalese which made Sinhalese unique people in the world, were introduced at two points of history. First, King Pandukabaya introduced the very first National qualities of the Sinhalese in 375 BC. Then, 129 years later, during King Devanampiyatissa’s reign, the great National philosophy which placed Lanka in the developed world, was introduced.
Myth No. 2: There is a Sinhala-Tamil problem in Sri Lanka.
Even Dutugemunu-Elara was a Sinhala-Tamil war
This is also a lie made public by those who wanted to create a Sinhala-Tamil ethnic war.
Dutugemunu liberated Lanka from the 2nd invasion. The invaders were a South Indian mercenary force, led by one South Indian Warlord named Elara. ( Unlike in Sri Lanka, the mercenary career was a popular job for many South Indians. It was easy to conspire, fight & destroy, than to be understanding, patient & creative).
There were Lankans who couldn’t exploit the people or the resources of Lanka to their selfish advantage because of the great National philosophy. Many local and foreign merchants, Power-hungry ministers, corrupt officials, rich and powerful regional families were among these selfish corrupt Lankans. There is proof that they hired South Indian warlords to come and destroy the government in Sri Lanka. Then together with the invader, they ruled Sri Lanka until the patriots liberated the country again.
This is what Dutugemunu, like millions of other patriots, fought against. Elara had many infantry and cavalry units manned by the jobless Sinhalese hired by these rich Sinhalese families. Many selfish corrupt Sinhalese were part of the Elara’s rule. They worked as Ministers, Generals, and officials. They fought against Dutugemunu’s liberation army. There is no doubt that there were South Indian descendants and half South Indian, Half Lankan patriots serving in the Dutugemunu’s liberation army. When they fought they called the opponent by any derogatory name. Any Lankan patriot would have called the South Indian mercenary “a worthless Damila” and the selfish corrupt Lankan who served Elara’s army as “a treacherous greedy coward”.
During the British period, those who wanted an ethnic separation, twisted this part of history so as to portray this as a Sinhala-Tamil war.
Myth No. 3: North & East of Sri Lanka is the Tamil homeland
Many communities around the world have different customs, philosophies, religions, habits, practices, and beliefs. Naturally, all these communities have one place in the world which is regarded as their homeland. In this homeland, their way of culture is normally the main culture. The national philosophies, political, social, and trade policies of the country are all derived from this main culture. All other communities who live in such countries live under their system, with basic and sufficient human and civic rights to practice their own culture, within the society based on the main culture.
For example, in countries like USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, which are favourite migrant destinations these days, there is a main culture. That is based on the western society. There are dozens of different cultures in existence in these countries. But these cultures cannot change or override the practices of the main culture. These foreign cultures can co-exist, in sufficient and limited ways so as not to be a threat to the main culture of the country, in ethnic or religious venues and events. The foreign migrants who practice these foreign cultures have all basic human and civil rights, but they can never challenge or try to change the main culture of the land. Likewise, Sri Lanka also has their unique society based on the great national philosophy. All non-Sinhalese who lived in Lanka enjoyed this. No other minority in anywhere else in the world enjoyed a better multi-culturism. They benefited from this non-discriminatory philosophy more than any foreigner who lived in any other country. Time to time, this great system was weakened by the invaders and the selfish corrupt collaborators.
But in Sri Lanka there is a conspiracy backed by foreign organizations to despise and humble the main culture. Some missionaries who arrived with the Portuguese invaders initiated this. But it developed into a well-organized, very well researched, and very well planned campaign during the British occupation. Missionaries had Lanka’s Best Educational system in Jaffna peninsula while the Sinhalese patriots fought and died to free the country. This anti-Sinhala campaign intensified as graduates of the Missionary education system in the Jaffna peninsula, worked their way into the higher and powerful echelons of the Sri Lankan society. Even today, foreign agents sponsor these political, religious and terrorist leaders from minority communities against the native culture. With that enormous foreign funding, they have been engaged in propaganda against the rights of the main culture. The result is today that the whole world believes that North and East is the homeland of the Tamils.
Even if the Sinhalese lived there for 1000 years, Tamilnadu would never allow one third of Tamilnadu to be separated as a Sinhalese homeland when Sri Lanka, which is home to the unique Sinhalese civilization, is only 40 km away.
Many South Indian invaders and traders took residence in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore. Since British times, they either migrated to or were forcibly taken as workers to South Africa, Canada, Australia and Europe. Would these countries allow these Tamil descendants to claim parts of these countries as a Tamil homeland ? Would these countries, apart from the basic human rights and civil liberties, even listen to the unfair racist Tamil demands such as the ones demanded in Sri Lanka?
Imagine if Indonesian warlords and kings had invaded Australia 26 times during the last 2500 years. Let us assume that the prisoners were allowed to live in Northern territory so that they could visit their relatives and friends easily. Would Australia ever allow any of these descendants to claim Northern territory, QLD and NSW as the homeland of the Indonesians?
Tamil homeland is actually in the Tamilnadu state in South India, which is several times the size of Sri Lanka. That is where the Tamil culture and the religion should be the way of the state.
Myth No. 4: Tamils should have exclusive rights in the North & East
It is such an injustice to think that Tamils have exclusive rights in the north & East. Through out history, all Sri Lankans, including the Sinhalese and the non-Sinhalese were born, lived and died in all parts Sri Lanka.
South Indian descendants preferred to live in the northern most tip of the land because it was easier to cross into South India to visit their relatives and friends. When the prosperity of Lanka made many families rich, some rich south Indian families in Jaffna began to dream of more power. They hired, or sometimes collaborated with, the South Indian warlords and kings to invade Lanka. When the invader made the central government weak, these families claimed self-rule in Jaffna. This also happened in Kalutara, Kandy, Colombo, and in many areas of Ruhuna. This warlord rule was NOT limited to Jaffna peninsula alone. It is ridiculous to portray this warlord rule as a Tamil rule of Sri Lanka.
If Tamil community should get a separate homeland, why shouldn’t other communities get their own homelands too? In that case, Burgher community might prefer the district of Colombo. Muslim community might prefer parts of the east and the south west. Sinhalese could claim whole of Sri Lanka because historical and archaeological evidence prove their rights all over Sri Lanka. What do we do when these areas overlap with one another? Is Sri Lanka large enough for this kind of separations? Who really wants this and funds these conspirators?
Colombo district has over 3305 persons per square kilometer. But Trinco, Batticaloa, Ampara, and Kilinochchi districts have less than 190 persons per square kilometer. Vavuniya and Mannar districts have less than 100 people per square kilometer. Mulaitivu district has only 50 persons per kilometer. Is it right to own these lands by one ethnic group as a "traditional homeland" ? Where else can the other Sri Lankans migrate to ? Where else can other Sri Lankans cultivate ? There is simply not enough room left in the rest of the country.
After all, these are the lands inhabited by all Lankans ever since the beginning of the civilisation, until the majority Sinhalese were driven out of these areas in horrific ethnic cleansing.
Even after the ethnic cleansing by Kalinga Magha in 1216 AD, after the Great massacre of the Sinhalese in Jaffna in 1478 AD, after the Sinhalese of the east were weakened during the British period, and despite repeated LTTE attacks, many brave Sinhalese still remain in these areas for these areas are as much a traditional homeland to them as it is to others who had lived in these areas.
In Trincomalee, the proposed capital city of the mythical Tamil kingdom, more than 90% of the people in Padaviya, Gomarankadawala, and Seruwila are all Sinhalese. 82.8% of the people in Moraweva are Sinhalese. More than 79% of the people in Kantalai are Sinhalese. In cleared areas of the Vavuniya district, 98.7% are Sinhalese. In seven divisions of Ampara district, more than 98% of the population is Sinhalese.
(Please consider all these and more statistics available at government institutions. Invisible forces who had infiltrated into the system taking advantage of the open multi-culturism, do not allow these data to be published.)
Myth No. 5: Sinhala-Tamil conflict has a long history
There never was a Sinhala- Tamil conflict as such. There were selfish South Indians who lived in Lanka who were notorious for their lack of loyalty. When the state was powerful they would seek to serve in the Lankan govt. When the invaders landed they would join the invaders. When the invaders rule Lanka, they would collaborate hard to impress the invader and to gain titles and positions. When the patriots including the good South Indians living in Lanka, liberated the country they would become loyal again. ( It is important to mention that there were such Sinhalese as well. Then there were other foreign descendants like the Persians, Greeks, Afghans, Phoenicians, Middle Easterners, Burmese, and the Chinese who collaborated with the invader in order to obtain trade opportunities.)
The much publicized campaigns by King Parakramabahu-6 were only efforts to unite the country. Some rich regional families in Jaffna rebelled against the central government around 1450 AD. Since the horrendous destruction in the 22nd invasion ( Kalingha Maghas) the central government was hopelessly weak. These regional families enjoyed rebel rule in their tiny town “kingdoms” until the central government liberated the land and the people again. These are what any other government in any other country would have done and would do. No country or government would tolerate parts of the country to be ruled by selfish rich families. Eelamists are portraying these as Sinhala invasions of the Tamil homeland.
There never was a Sinhala-Tamil conflict. Whoever harassed, beat-up, or killed a Tamil in Sri Lanka would do the same to a Sinhalese who would dare to complain about the injustice, unfairness or oppression. Arrogant, selfish, and corrupt members of the Sri Lanka’s ruling class who were most of the time funded, and advised by the foreign organizations, targeted all Sri Lankans including Tamils and Sinhalese in order to maintain their oppressive system. Through out history, there was always the conflict between the good (those who believed in the great National philosophy which guaranteed the success of ALL Sri Lankans) and the bad (those who were after selfish personal ambitions).
Myth No. 6:
Sri Lanka should have taken example from India and kept English as the main language
“India retained English language without forcing the language of the majority on the minorities. Therefore Sinhala shouldn’t have been the state language”. This is also such a distortion of facts.
In India, there are over 1600 languages. Of them, only 18 are major ones. Of them, India officially recognized 16. All these languages are unique to local areas and are spoken by culturally, and racially unique communities. In Sri Lanka, there aren’t more than half a dozen languages (including minor ones like Arabic). Of them, three are major ones (Sinhalese, Tamil, English) and they are officially recognized.
In India, there is no majority as such. Hindi language spoken ONLY BY 39% of the Indian population, has been made the ONLY official language of India. English is ONLY one of the associated languages for official purposes.
In Sri Lanka, 78% of the population is the Sinhalese. Sinhalese are clearly the majority who had endeavored real hard to maintain their native civilization through thick and thin. In Sri Lanka, though Sinhala language is the mother tongue of the 78% of the population, BOTH Tamil AND English are used as officially recognized languages. ( If someone really wants to compare India and Sri Lanka, then Sinhala language should become the ONLY official language in Sri Lanka. But the Sinhalese had not done that. )
Myth No. 7: Sri Lanka should have taken example from India and adopted a Federal System
“Sri Lanka must have Federal politics by having ruling power delegated to the local states”
India : India needs local rule
India is a vast area consisting of thousand different cultures and many religions that formed hundreds of separate kingdoms. (Even the smallest of these kingdoms were generally larger than Sri Lanka). Time to time, these kingdoms were brought together under one rule, by the military power of one of the kingdoms or by the invaders. At all other times, these kingdoms remained politically independent. When British left, Indian Central Government HAD TO recognise that fact in order to form the large country of India. That was why the Indian Central Govt was created with the 97 most important responsibilities of a country such as defence, foreign affairs, banking, customs, currency, and communication. The Local Governments which rule the 25 States divided into 7 territories, has 66 responsibilities such as limited armed police, education, agriculture, public health. 47 other important responsibilities such as economic, labour and social planning and economic controls are shared between the Local Govts and the Central Government so that the central government has good control over them.
At no point the Indian Central Govt has allowed any loop holes for an area to break away from the central government on an ethnic basis. Since 1955, Indian central Govt has introduced rules to stop Tamil Separatism in South India. Dravidian hardliners in South India protested against Hindi, a language spoken only by 39% of the Indian population, becoming the ONLY official language of India. ( English is ONLY an associated language for official purposes in India ).
Responding to vigorous campaigns in South India for a Separate Dravidian state and the use of Tamil language, Nehru introduced the 16th amendment forcing the Govt officials to take an oath to uphold sovereignty and integrity of India.
This prevented treachery by the South Indian govt officials.
Sri Lanka is yet to introduce such laws to stop the treachery of the minority political and religious leaders.
Sri Lanka : Sri Lanka does NOT need Local rules
Unlike India, Sri Lanka was a comparatively tiny, ONE SINGLE civilisation with a unique culture and a state religion. (Even today, after so many destructions, the Sinhalese are 78% of the population. Sinhalese have been chased away from the north and the east of Sri Lanka in bloody ethnic cleansing since 1025 AD. These facts have been covered up by shrewd propaganda). It was only when the Lankan government was weak, that the local chiefs from all corners of Sri Lanka including the north, the west, the east and the south, became warlords and refused to PAY TAXES. Then these warlords, simply because they were NOT challenged, claimed to be KINGS in their tiny little fantasy TOWN KINGDOMS ( Such as the ones in several towns of Ruhuna, Kalutara, Colombo, Kandy and, how can we forget, Jaffna ). Ruled by opportunistic, power hungry rebel leaders who were usually the ex-employees of the central government, these were NOT states or local kingdoms with separate racial, political or cultural identities. They thrived specially when Sri Lanka was under the invader’s rule. While the Sinhalese patriots were busy fighting the powerful invaders, these selfish rebels had such a jolly good time that they even forgot that they were robbing the country of the unity. Now such rebel rule is publicized as Tamil kingdoms by the Eelam propaganda machine and their friends in the media.
