SUPERGIRL

Gough Says about Supergirl, Helen Slater & Bizarro

iF Magazine was given a glimpse by Alfred Gough into what having Supergirl on the CW series will mean and that also includes the revelation of an appearance by the 1984 Supergirl herself – Helen Slater.

In the season 7 premiere, Supergirl (whose name is Kara) will arrive. She’s Clark Kent’s 19-year old cousin and was born on Krypton. She is the daughter of Zor-El, Jor-El’s brother and she possesses all of Clark’s powers and one he doesn't have yet – the ability to fly. She’s also a bit rebellious and that puts her at odds with Clark and on the radar of Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore) will also be a romantic interest.

The Interview:

iF MAGAZINE: The original SUPERGIRL movie was derided by fans and is still ripped apart to this day. What do you think the key is to making the character work within the SMALLVILLE universe without carrying over the movie stigma?

ALFRED GOUGH: I think that the film was so long ago, and so forgettable, that most people have done just that. Our interest in Supergirl stems from her recent resurgence in comics especially the work done by our old pal Jeph Loeb.

iF: With Clark it's a no flight, no tights rule. For Supergirl, she's going to fly, but are you giving here the "no tights" rule too?

GOUGH: Kara will have flights, but no tights

iF: Will Supergirl be learning her powers like Clark did during the season or will she be more advanced when we meet her than Clark and serve as sort of a mirror to Clark's evolution?

GOUGH: Kara will be more advanced, although there will be powers that Clark teaches her about and vice versa -- perhaps Clark will even attempt "flying lessons."

iF: Will we be seeing a Helen Slater cameo by any chance?

GOUGH: Our plan is to have Helen on the show sometime this season, although when, how and who she would play are still up in the air.

iF: Since Jeannot Szwarc helmed the original SUPERGIRL movie and has directed many SMALLVILLE episodes, any plans for having him direct the first episode of Supergirl's appearance?

GOUGH: Jeannot, unfortunately, was all booked up on other shows by the time we got the official Season 7 pick-up, so he won't be back this season.

iF: How will Bizarro fit into all of this and will the character have a season-long arc?

GOUGH: You are just gonna have to wait and see about Bizarro like everybody else, but I'll tell you one thing, he won't be completely vanquished in the season opener like Zod was.

Supergirl in Smallville

According to the latest and exclusive TV Guide news report, Smallville executive producer Al Gough has stated that Superman's cousin, Kara, also known as 'Supergirl', will appear in season 7. She will make her debut in the season premiere and will be back for about half the season's episodes. Apparently, her powers will also develop more quickly than Clark's.

"When Smallville returns for its seventh season this fall it will be revealed that Clark Kent (Tom Welling) is not the only member of his family to survive the destruction of the planet Krypton. His cousin Kara “was sent to Earth in a ship that arrived at the same time as baby Kal-El’s,” reveals executive producer Al Gough, referring to Clark by his Kryptonian name. “But there was a problem and she’s been in suspended animation for the last 16 years. We’ll find out in the season premiere that the big dam break in last season’s finale is the reason she’s finally awoken."

QUOTE:
Kara makes her debut in the season premiere of the CW drama and will appear in about half of this season’s episodes. A casting notice is set to go out shortly, and producers hope to unveil their new addition at July’s Comic-Con International in San Diego.

More News on Smallville's Season 6 DVD

Warner Home Video has recently released the special feature details for the Smallville Season 6 DVD set as well as a cover image. The complete set will hit stores on September 18, 2007. Below are the bonuses you can expect to find on the DVD. Unfortunately, there will be no gag reel in this season's set yet again.

1) Green Arrow: The History of the Emerald Archer: Since the early 1940s Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow has grown in popularity and respect. Once seen as the poor man's Batman, he later evolved into a nuanced character which has rivaled some of the best superheroes in the industry. This retrospective will feature the interviews of those living legends that were fortunate enough to have written or inked this character through the years. Traced will be the lineage from his opulent roots, to the new story line featured in Smallville.

2) Smallville: The Ultimate Fans: Superman can rival any franchise, and this documentary is set on showing just how powerful the forces are behind the almost epic fandom associated with this title. DVD feature shows the results of an online search, which was conducted recently to locate the "Ultimate Smallville Fan." Even more detailed will be the legacy which this show is building upon daily both at conventions, and websites being hosted around the world. A global phenomenon, this featurette will examine the craze and justify for the fans why they should be proud to be associated with Kal-El (aka Superman).

3) The Oliver Queen Chronicles: These animated mobisodes made their debut on the extra small screen of a cell phone. For the first time they can now become a part of the Smallville fan's library. Tracing the origin story of Green Arrow through animation, the end user is treated to a refreshing take on how Oliver Queen made his transformation to the Emerald Archer.

4) The Making of The Oliver Queen Chronicles: A retrospective glimpse into what was involved from concept to completion with the Green Arrow mobisodes.
