11 Tamil civilians under LTTE custody seek Security Forces protection - Batticaloa
Eleven Tamil civilians who were held as prisoners by the LTTE in the Toppigala area had managed to escape and sought protection from the security forces last Sunday July 15, as troops consolidated their hold over Toppigala, the LTTE's former stronghold in the East.

The civilians who had reached the troops at Kinniady in Batticaloa stated that as they escaped the LTTE outfit as they could not bear LTTE's toture, harassments and hardships imposed on them, before the government security forces rolled in.
In their interrogation, these civilians said they were detained inside dark torture cells and LTTE terrorists had forced them to setup landmines targeting the troops marching towards Toppigala area. In some instances they had been ordered to enter the government controlled area and gather information on behalf of the terrorists.

These civilians further revealed that some of their colleagues were gunned down for not obeying the LTTE's orders.
Burn injuries, scars and other swellings on their bodies testify to the enormous suffering they had undergone while under LTTE detention, defence sources said.
Two teenagers, seven persons in their twenties and two in their late thirties are among those who surrendered to the troops, defence sources further said.
