Speak to the Earth, and it shall teach thee.
Job 12:8

Over 40% of the people are engaged in activities directly dependant on the environment and about 255 people live in urban or semi urban areas. The high population and the continuing effort to improve their living has created a tremendous pressure on the natural environment of the country.

The challenge faced by the country is the imperative of harmonizing economic and social development with environmental management.

Although an overall current environmental issues in Asia reveals that Sri Lanka's problems are, to some extent , similar to those of other developing countries, they are unique in the context of Sri Lanka's size, topography, location of water bodies, the large number of micro ecological systems , population growth and movements and trends of social and economic development.
