Nice one for your 100th post.
I'll check and tell you.
In my case I need a very fast . . . super fast zip program ;)

I think 7z is the best compression method, Also the program is somewhat faster than other programs zip/rar in loading, beside if you use 7zip or bzip2 you will need more system resources to get a better compression and extraction.
http://www.7zip.org
Sadly 7zip can't do iso or bin, but winrar can :(

7-zip is the fastest compression tool I have come across. Ironically, it does a better job with Zip rather than the native 7z format. Also it is one of the two native 64bit compression tools available (AFAIK); the other one being Squeez. But Squeez is nowhere near 7-zip's speed. I wish they made it more user friendly and easy to use as WinRAR. 64bit helps to improve 7-zip's performance up to 80%. Even in 32bit mode, it is still faster than WinRAR's compress/decompress performance.
One problem is that 7-zip has trouble extracting split RAR files that I download most of the times via torrents, using the context menu entry (it doesn't show up :(). So I have to keep WinRAR for those. :(

7-zip can open/extract ISO, but not BIN. I'm using 4.52 Beta x64
But I never extract ISO or BIN files. I only mount them Alcohol. :)
If I need to EDIT them, I use MagicISO Maker.

7zip actually did open iso, I couldn't test bin coz I don't have one of those files around. I'll be careful about what I say now on

I'd also like to keep a single archiver for all archives, it's a pain to use winzip and winrar together and occasionally you will find 7z archives. 7zip can handle zip and 7z and I've had no problems extracting rar archives with it.
winrar can open 7z, so looks like winzip can be dumped.

I think it's a problem with the dictionary size used to create a 7z archive.
If the dictionary size is higher better compression but needs more resources. Small dictionary sizes mean less compression but lesser memory usage.
As per the 7zip manual
Dictionary size:
Specifies Dictionary size for compression method.
Usually higher Dictionary size gives more compression ratio. But compressing can be slower and it can require more memory.
Memory (RAM) usage for LZMA compressing is about 11 times more than dictionary size. Memory usage for LZMA decompressing is close to value of dictionary size. Memory usage for PPMd compressing and decompressing is almost equal to dictionary size.

I'm using the default dictioary size. However, I have enabled "Use large memory pages" and maybe it is helping the high speed as it is intended to do.

BTW, I did some tests yesterday.
Test 1:
Compress a ~70MB folder with few SWF files with WinRAR and 7-zip
Results: WinRAR took 39 seconds, 7-zip x64 took only 5 seconds!!! 7-zip resulted with higher compression ratio as well.
Test 2:
Compress a folder with mp3 files. Folder size was about 90MB.
Results: WinRAR took 40 seconds, 7-zip x64 took only 8 seconds!!! 7-zip resulted with higher compression ratio as well.
Simply stunning results....

Yes it is an os alternative to DivX. :D
But the codecs developed by http://www.xiph.org/ is the hallmark of opensourcing multimedia. So a fanatic might go for them before trying others.
Some linux distros like Fedora doesn't support non opensource formats and they doesn't even have ntfs support out of the box. :( Excellent choice for fanatics.

The 7z format is known to give high compression ratios :D Also 7zip gives more options than winrar in compressing a file.
I never believed the stats posted on the 7zip homepage, but if you get those results I'll have to believe 7zip is best compression program. Too bad it doesn't have proper linux support. I couldn't get p7zip to work on linux :(

Actually, no. Still, 7zip was faster in my system. But remember, different processors handle them differently and probably different families from one manufacturer do too.
I remember in the AthlonXP/P4 days, P4's faired better with Winzip and AXPs faired better with WinRAR.

Well, WinZip is slower than WinRAR, but 7-zip compresses to zip format faster than both of them means it's very good programming. The language is not irrelevant in this case.
I have to agree that WinRAR's GUI is extremely easy to use than other two.

What is better WinZip (http://www.winzip.com), WinRar (http://www.rarlabs.com) or 7Zip (http://www.7zip.org).
I did a test for compression ratios and time taken by archiving the same set of files with all 3 programs and measuring the time taken to compress and compressed size. ;)
The computer used was a laptop with following specifications:
Intel Centrino Duo 1.83GHz
1GB DDR2 RAM
The folder used for the test:
contents: several pdf documents
size: 101MB
The compression ratio was calculated as the disk space saved, ie:
Compression Ratio(Space Saved) = 1 - Compressed Size / Uncompressed Size
The higher percentage means better compression

I checked several dictionary sizes with 7z in 7-zip.
64kB resulted in the fastest = about 5.5MB/s
But all 1MB (this is the next option available after 64kB), 2MB and 4MB were giving about 3.4-3.5MB/s.
My CPU's L2 cache is 2MB.

Grate work. ( but I did that 4-5 years ago)
Thanks for the compliments and Congrats Bro for your tests
That result also tells about your computer technical info. Like you have small cash memory
Maybe or no  The laptop has a Centrino processor, Centrino is built for low battery usage and has less performance considered to a desktop processor, ideal for laptops so it has less cache than a normal desktop processor. To be percise the laptop has "only 2MB of L2 cache" ;)
WinZip ge awamagula wage.:(
Yes the day everone adopts 7zip. But the dominant program for zip format is winzip and it's the archive format natively supported by windows. The "awamagula" will not happen too soon.
Use small dic size because you have small cash MEM. time will go down.
What's to be considered is the RAM and processor, I'm not sure if cache will have a big impact on compressions. I'm just doing a test, It's no use lowering dic size just to decrease time but must give a good compression.
For same file as above:
WinRar -- format: rar dic size: 64KB
time taken: 26 sec
compressed size: 87.4MB
compression ratio: 13.47%
7Zip -- format: zip dic size 64KB
time taken: 11 sec
compressed size: 87.1MB
compression ratio:13.76%
See that 7zip gives better performance with time and a slighltly good compression too. ;)

Java : bytecode interpreter
Delphi: Compiler
C/C++: Compiler
VB: you can choose to intepret (Pcode) or convert to native code.
For designing a compression algorithm you need knowledge in system design tools like UML, don't ask me how to use UML (I suck at it) and then you can use any language to implement. I'll suggest C++

You mean speed of

and/or

I’m not a gini but….
You have lot more to know sis. And I wana change this style that we smile others.
Wars thing is, I can’t give you all of my knowledge in second.
Try to understand this
Vb can’t hit Delphi speed
Delphi can’t hit C++
C++ cant C
Java > eek (in case if speed only)

Java is easy to code and master and also crossplatform, but has performace problems due to it's intepreted nature.
VB is the easiest way to deploy programs on the windows platform (performace is ok) but as you see it is not crossplatform. [you may try to run .net programs on linux with mono]
I've not used Delphi, so I don't know a thing about it. (heard most delphi developers now prefer C#). Surely C/C++ is fast but Assembly will be faster and machine code will be the fastest you can go. (unless you can manually switch electric potentials at warp speed on the processor).
Now to the point.
My previous post doesn't mean all compilers have same speed, and all interpreters have same speed.
delphi and c++ using compilers doesn't mean they are same in performace, performace of a computer language will depend on the coding and how far the specific compiler is optimised for the task. Taking for example the C++ compilers Visual C++ and gcc (g++) will compile C++ code but you will find somewhat different performance.

Developing algorithms for data compression and encryption is a cutting edge task, serious business. :) Data compression and encryption algorithms are more important today and for the future where information will be the most valued and most dynamic factor which will drive our world.

Some compiler benchmarks. Not all compliers are same in performance. I never said all compilers have the "same" performance regardless of system, language, hardware

Also check this page, it compares mainly python (intepreted) but you will see a nice table with a whole mix of compilers and intepreters in it.
http://bitboost.com/people/intro-to-python-tcs/intro-to-python--2002-11--special-topic--runspeed--002.html
You will see that intepreters (ruby phyton java) are in the bottom of the table related to compilers (c c++)
