Sri Lankan players participating in the controversial Indian Cricket League will be banned from the national team and all tournaments organized by Sri Lanka's cricket governing body, a Sri Lankan official said on Friday.
The ICL, viewed as a rival body to Board of Control for Cricket in India is organizing a Twenty-20 event said to feature top international stars and Indian youngsters, including former West Indies batsman Brian Lara.
Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Kangadaran Mathivanan said that the administrators took the decision because players' commitments to other leagues may hamper tournaments organized by Sri Lanka's cricket governing body.
"It will be a problem if the players start going into different leagues and they can't have two employers," Mathivanan said.
The BCCI, cricket's governing body in India, has refused to recognize the ICL, which is promoted by a television company and has the support of several high profile former cricketers including Kapil Dev who led India to World Cup success in 1983.
Earlier this week, Sri Lanka Cricket conceded to a request by former captain Marvan Atapattu to release him from his national contract amid media speculation over his links to the ICL.
Atapattu who is currently in England, could not be reached for comment.
Mathivanan had said that Sri Lanka Cricket will follow the stand taken by the International Cricket Council over the ICL but he said Friday that the ICC has now asked individual national bodies to decide their own policies on the issue independently.
