Ven Uva Mawegama Sumedha thera who was taken into custody for allelegedy possessing grenades, weapons and ammunition in his temple was released on bail today.
The monk who was backing opposition candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka was arrested from his temple in Maligwatte ahead of elections.
However the TID informed courts that there was no evidence against the monk and said there was no objections in releasing him.
Accordingly Colombo Additional Magistrate Lal Bandara Ranasinghe released the monk.
At least 56 handgrenades were among the items recovered from the temple.
The monk was a staunch SLFP supporter earlier, but later he had decided to back Gen Fonseka and was operating from Gen Fonseka's Rajakeeya Mawatha office.
