So you’re a Googler, eh? But did you know that every time you Google “Chicken Sandwich” or “how to relieve stress” or “2012 end of the world,” it takes the processing power of up to 1,000 machines (http://www.labnol.org/internet/search/google-query-uses-1000-machines/7433/).
Google Fellow Jeff Dean shared some statistics about Google’s impressive growth run from 1999 to 2009 at a WSDM 2009 (http://wsdm2009.org/program.php) keynote speech. Search queries and processing power for Google have gone up by a factor of 1000, while latency has gone down from 1000ms to 200ms. That’s a whupping 0.2 seconds for a single search.
The significant reason as to why 1000 machines is needed, instead of previously 12, is because the complete Google search index is stored in memory. Quite mind-boggling to even think about it. I doubt any human mind can even try to comprehend the vastness of the index.
