Several villages near Matale town are sinking. Already about 500 houses have been damaged due to the sinking of the ground.
There had been minor cracks in the walls earlier but with the tsunami of 26th December, 2004 the cracks have widened and several houses have become dangerous to live in says Mr. M.M.C.U.B. Keremada, Geologist.
Prof. Kapila Dasanayake of Geological Department of Peradeniya University says the ground may suddenly give way and a large area could be affected.
The scientists have expressed concern about the families that live in these villages and have requested authorities to settle them elsewhere.
