Basil settles with Athavulla and swears in tomorrow
(LeN- 2007 Sep. 18, 7.00 PM) Basil Rajapakse is to take oaths as a Member of the Parliament tomorrow (19) on auspicious time.
United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Secretary Susil Prema Jayantha has informed his appointment to the Election Commissioner in writing.
Basil Rajapakse was nominated to the national list seat held by late Minister of Irrigation Anver Ismail who represented the National Congress led by Athavulla.
With this appointment, three members of the Rajapakse family now hold the executive and legislative powers. Mahinda Rajapakse is the President while his elder brother Chamal Rajapakse holds two cabinet portfolios. In addition, President's brother Gotabhaya Rajapakse is the powerful Defense Secretary.
Sources said that Basil will remain as a MP until end of October and will swear in a senior most cabinet portfolio in the reshuffle that is expected to take place before the budget. His portfolio could be either the Ministry of Nation building or another one held by the President, sources said.
Reports said that the leader of National Congress and Minister of Water Supply and Drainage A.L.M. Athavulla's demand to grant the national list seat to a Muslim from the Eastern Province was settled in a non-political way.
Minister Athavulla denied to comment to 'LeN' on this matter. He was in the parliament by that time.
According to the No:9 (3) Special Provisions of the UPFA constitution, a vacancy of the parliament or a provincial council seat belonged to a UPFA member party have to be filled from a nominee of that party.
Anver Ismail was appointed from the national list to represent the National Congress that contested the 2004 election as candidates of the UPFA. Then UPFA leader former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumarathunga assigned slots in the national+
list to the UPFA parties after the 2004 election.
