Teargas used in Maharagama

Police used tear gas to disperse opposition protestors in Maharagama who demonstrated against the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka a short while ago. Several such protests were held against the general’s arrest in several areas yesterday as well.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a protest called by the opposition agitating for the unconditional release of former army commander General Sarath Fonseka, eyewitnesses said.

The said the protest called jointly by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) and the left-leaning Janatha Vimukthi Perumana (JVP) took place close to the Youth Centre at Maharagama in the outskirts of the capital Colombo around 4.00 pm today.

Police have repeatedly used tear gas and water cannons to break up similar protests in several parts of the country over the past 48 hours.
