Gen Fonseka’s Arrest not a Political Move”, President says to Opposition Leader

Wickremesinghe met President Mahinda Rajapaksha at the Temple Trees yesterday (February 12).
The Opposition Leader had mainly discussed over the arrest of defeated Presidential candidate from the Opposition retired Major General Sarath Fonseka. President Rajapaksha had emphasized that the Opposition Leader that the arrest of the General Fonseka was not any means political decision, but it had been taken place to safeguard the law and order of the country. President had reiterated that it was an issue of “Army Discipline”.
At the discussion, the President had also said that General Fonseka had been provided all his needs and nothing to worry about his requirements. He has further briefed the Opposition Leader that the investigations over the allegations against General Fonseka will be accelerated. “He has every opportunity to free from the allegations within the legal frame, unless he had done any offence”, the President had added.
“If General Fonseka wishes to challenge his arrest in the courts he is allowed to go to the Supreme Courts”, President told the Opposition Leader, the statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat said.
To the request by Wickremesinghe to bring meals by someone else instead of his wife Anoma Fonseka, the President had said that such a decision should be taken by the Army Commander and not him (president).
Anyway, the President had told the Opposition Leader that his wife (Shiranthi Rajapaksha) came to visit me twice a day when I was imprisoned by then government in the eightees.” She was pregnant at that time. I saw in the media that General Fonseka’s wife was asking to visit his husband and if she wishes she can continue”, the President had said.
