US computer company Sun Microsystems is to cut up to 5,000 jobs, or 13% of its workforce worldwide, in an attempt to turn around five years of losses.
The firm aims to eliminate the jobs over the next six months, which it said should yield annual cost savings of up to $590m (£313m).
But the restructuring plan is expected to cost Sun up to $500m over the next few financial quarters.
The firm wants to regain market share from rivals Dell and Hewlett-Packard.
New boss
At the end of April, Sun's co-founder and chief Scott McNealy announced he was stepping down.
Former chief operating officer Jonathan Schwartz took the helm as chief executive.
That news came as the US firm revealed third quarter losses had widened to $217m (£121.4m) from $28m at the same time a year ago.
Shares in the company are currently languishing at about 90% lower than the highs hit during the dotcom boom of 2000.
Sun is the world's fourth biggest maker of server computers, used to operate websites and corporate networks.
In June 2005 it made a move to boost its earnings by buying a major player in the data storage market, Storagetek, for $4.1bn.
Last year it also announced a tie-up with web search engine giant Google, aimed at challenging the dominance of Microsoft's Office suite of word processing and spreadsheet software.
Java is the best from them, now .NET almost there. I think in this game Java almost can’t compete with .NET well
Solaris still struggling..
UltraSPARC seems to have some good future but still no real competition with others.

Anyway open source is good, and at times it’s the best! But we have to agree there are proprietary products which can beat open source products. Open source not best in all areas, I mean atleast for now. So we should talk the truth other than what we like or company background or it’s history. We just compare the products not whoz behind it.
And other main thing we like to get everything free and everything open source. But how those software developers gonna earn? They also have to eat n have families.
In my opinion you go to a doctor and channel him okay you just don’t expect it for free. It’s only like 5mins of doctor’s time but you pay like Rs500/- for that.
But you don’t like to pay anything for something which has undergone years of work and lot of effort and skill. You expect it free! Actually in this world if every software become free, no one will be there to code them coz programmer gets nothing. How he can earn?
People don't expect services of engineers, lawyers, teachers, accountants for free, but only expect free from developers. haha so it's funny.
I’m not a programmer or developer so it’s not a problem for me. But we should understand the truth. Thats what i'm telling. If we think everything will become free then we are just dreaming...
So there should be both paid software and free. It’ll make the competition and consumers will get best for what they pay.
