DEPORTATION OF SRI LANKAN GIRL PUBLIC OUTRAGE IN NEW ZEALAND NZ IMMIGRATION MINISTER FORCED TO RESIGN
A 16 year old Sri Lankan girl Thakshila and her grand mother fled to New Zealand two years ago seeking asylum citing political persecution in Sri Lanka. Later it transpired that the real reason was sexual abuse of the girl by relatives from an early age. The girl and grandmother were refused asylum in New Zealand twice. After a two year legal battle both were deported to Sri Lanka in mid February. This despite the girl saying she feared for her life if sent back home.
However, New Zealanders reacted with outrage and there is much opposition from human rights groups to the deportation of the Sri Lankan girl who sought asylum in New Zealand. In a startling development to the case New Zealand’s Minister for Immigration Lianne Dalziel was forced to resign all her portfolios after lying about a leak of documents related to the case.
According to the girl’s lawyer she was badly traumatized and a reputed psychiatrist certified her as unfit for travel. However, the Minister decided to act on the Immigration Service’s own report certifying the girl as fit to travel.
The girl and her grandmother arrived in Sri Lanka on 12th February. She was placed with caring Sisters in a Convent according to reports. Lawyers from ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) New Zealand got in touch with P.E.A.C.E. (Protecting Environment and Children Everywhere) which is the National Group of ECPAT in Sri Lanka, to obtain more details on the matter. Certain sections of the local Media have taken up the “cause” of this girl who is certainly at risk in this country.
