Need Help on Upgrading BIOS

My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-8VM533. I've downloaded a new BIOS version from Gigabyte. which was a file named "motherboard_bios_8vm533_f10.exe". how should I use this file to upgrade my BIOS?

Also there is a software from gigabyte named "@Bios" which will update the bios from within Windows. Is it safe to use it?

Well, you can flash from @BIOS utility. But you should try to do it from BIOS because it is the most perfect way. Least number of things can cause issues if you do that.

I think you can copy the BIOS file (not the exe; there must be a BIN file) to a flash drive, boot into BIOS and flash from there. I can do that on my mobo, but not sure that is there on yours. I suggest you check the manual first.

My motherboard supports the qFlash utility (there is a flash BIOS option on the BIOS). will it detect a Pen Drive if I copy the file to it?

Can't be sure about that. You'll have to check and see. The manual should state that though.

However, I have used @BIOS before. It is safe. Nothing bad happened.

To one of my friends, on a Gigabyte mobo, Windows didn't work after the BIOS flash. He had to format and reinstall Windows. (but I don't think it has anything to do with @BIOS)

"Autoexec.bat"
"Flash891.exe"
"8vm533.f10"

What should i do with these files?

They are used if you flash from a bootable diskette. But keep them in the same folder. @BIOS might need them.

BTW, why are you updating BIOS? If it doesn't fix any bugs that your are experiencing, or that sort of thing, I suggest that you don't take the risk. Don't try to fix it if it ain't already broken. :)

My computer and BIOS is over 3 years old. I bought a new DVD Writer last month. It's a Smasung SH-S182F. It has a E-IDE interface and I think my computer doesn't support it (Writer doesn't read discs correctly and doesn't write properly). I tried to find the problem (Checked the connections on the motherboard, checked for hardware errors, I even formatted and installed the system). so upgrading the BIOS is the last resort.

It could be a problem with the burner. The first every DVD Burner I bought was a Samsung TSST-soemthing...I can't remember..I was like that. Wouldn't read properly and failed to burn. PC House replaced it with a Gigabyte one (still crap, at least it worked)

I think I should take the Writer back to the shop and try to get a replacement rather than trying to upgrade the BIOS.

Yes. Or, maybe plug it in someone else's PC and see if it still behaves the same way. Then you can be sure if it is the writer or the PC. I highly doubt the system can render a DVD burner to not work properly.
