Hand phones are mostly used to demand claims of extortion in Jaffna it is learnt. Hence the mobile phone network has been decommissioned for the last three days in the peninsula, said Commander of the Security Forces in Jaffna Major General G.A. Chandrasiri at the meeting with the traders of Jaffna city yesterday morning at Gnanams Hotel. Over 200 traders took part in the meeting.
A small gang of people engaged in extortion of money are exploiting the names of troops at Palaly camp. We received information that the callers used to say they were speaking from the Palaly camp. As most of the calls originated from mobile phones, we decommissioned the network. If the traders can provide detailed information on this matter the security forces would take proper actions, said the Commander Chandrasiri.
