Originally, Cool Edit was a crippleware program. But the full version was extremely useful and flexible particularly for its time. Later, Cool Edit Pro was introduced which allowed for 32-bit floating point storage and processing as well as a basic multitrack environment. Processing was done destructively because the processing power of computers at the time were not fast enough to perform those functions in real time. With Cool Edit Pro v2.0, real time non-destructive processing was made possible and with v2.1 surround sound mixing was introduced. Cool Edit included many high quality integrated plugins such as noise reduction and FFT equalisation. Unfortunately, some of the original integrated processors were legacies from Cool Edit 96 and were of poor quality. Some of those processes are still present in the current Audition versions. Later in the life of Cool Edit Pro, the software fell behind its competition in flexibility, stability and sound quality.
Adobe purchased the latest, non-shareware version (Cool Edit Pro 2.1) from Syntrillium Software in May 2003 including the ability to record and mix unlimited tracks (up to the capabilities of your PC) and a large loop library called "Loopology" - but excluding such a simple operation as compressed audio (i.e. MP3) basic cut and join without re-encoding... (Syntrillium Software was founded in the early 1990's by Robert Ellison and David Johnston, both former Microsoft employees.) Adobe renamed the package Adobe Audition and released it on August 18, 2003.
While the first version of Audition was essentially Cool Edit Pro under a different name, version 1.5 was released in May 2004 with software improvements made by Adobe, such as pitch correction, frequency space editing, CD project view, basic video editing and integration with Adobe Premiere, and many enhancements to other functions.
Version 2.0 was released on January 17, 2006 with many major upgrades. ASIO (Audio stream input output) support, VST (Virtual Studio Technology) support, new mastering tools (many provided by iZotope) and a major facelift (see screenshot) helped boost what was once the inexpensive option for home studio work to a serious contender in the Digital Audio Workstation scene. Audition version 2.0 was a part of Adobe's Creative Suite 2. It isn't included with any version of Creative Suite 3. Instead Adobe Soundbooth is included with the Production Premium and Master Collection versions.
Version 3.0 was released in November 8, 2007. New features include VSTi virtual instrument support, enhanced spectral editing, better multi-track interface, and a handful of new effects. Audition 3.0 package also includes a collection of royalty-free loops.
