Pre-election violence and intimidation is on a steady increase, and an independent polls observer feared that the tension would rise in the next few days as the Elections day nears.

Keerthi Tenakoon with the Campaign For Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said that some 316 cases had already been reported from all parts of the country, mainly in the south and the central provinces.

He added that the bulk of the incidents involved candidates and supporters from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) as they take on each other to better their preferential vote bank.

He further said that a leading Minister from the Nuwara Eliya District was using goon squads to threaten and intimidate opponents in the area, and the police had failed in implementing the law.
