View Full Version : Intel Virtualization Technology (VT) - does it really work?

Since I have a new Intel CPU that supports VT, a friend asked me whether I feel a huge performance improvement in Virtual PC 2007 beta, which supports Intel's Virtualization Technology. I didn't know how to test it. However, Virtual PC was a lot more responsive than from my previous PC. This could be because the new CPU is about 3-4 times faster than my old CPU, or maybe because of VT, or both.

He asked me to run PCMark05 on a Windows XP SP2 virtual machine. He said he would do the same on his virtual PC. He has a Pentium 4C 3.12GHz CPU (3GHz nominal). We only checked the CPU performance in it. I scored ~3100 and he scored ~3040.

Damn! What went wrong? Is PCMark not a good benchmark to test it? (Note that, in Virtual PC, VT was enabled on my CPU and disabled on my friend's CPU)

In real Windows XP, my CPU can encode DivX files about 2.5 faster than his CPU, so it's not a problem with my CPU, performance wise. But it could be,
1. Virtual PC 2007 BETA doesn't have proper virtualization support
2. PCMark05 is not a good benchmark to test this feature

Can anyone of you recommend me to test Intel's VT on VirtualPC (provided that Virtual PC itself has the proper support for VT).

P.S.
This test was done when I had Windows Vista build 5840 (leaked pre-rtm) as the host OS. My friend has Vista build 5744 (RC2).
