View Full Version : Who would install Windows Vista when it is available

Anusha

Who would? I'm not 100% sure whether I would install it or not.

I have three requirements to complete before I fully migrate to Vista.
1. Another 1GB RAM to bring the tally up to 2GB
2. ATI's final Vista drivers because current gaming performance is not as good as XP's
3. An ADSL router to install Vista x64. CNET do not have x64 drivers even for XP. And for Vista x64, they have to be digitally signed, otherwise Vista won't let you install them. 32-bit Vista doesn't mind unsigned drivers. Routers don't need drivers, so I will not have a problem.

I'll wait another couple years for Vista service pack two.    I have all the hardware requirements but since XP is stable why ask for trouble

Anusha

Yeah, but Vista is supposed to be better, faster and safer than XP :)

XP is sometimes not stable for me. Yesterday I had to format and reinstall XP :( I want to have an OS which can work fast and stable for months before requiring a reinstall.

What do you do?? I have work machines that run for years with heavy graphics programms running. No problems. Even my Video editing machines run for more than 6 months before reinstall

I know what MS is saying they said the same thing about 98 then ME then XP. So I take there slogans with a grain of salt

Well if you have a fast comp like over 3Ghz or dualcore and RAM like 2Gb moving to Vista seems worthy.

XP was running fine until yesterday I tried to make a startup program a "service" so that I can run it even before logging in. I restarted and it gave an error and most of my startup programs stopped working. I went into safe mode and removed that service, but then I got a BSOD. Since it wasn't shutdown properly, that service wasn't removed from registry. Then I went back into safemode and removed it and this time it worked. But when I tried to log in, i got an error message saying something's wrong with winlogon.exe. It went on and on and I couldn't live like this. wtf! I reinstalled from the scratch.

Bill Gates version means Vista da? That is what I installed yesterday, and games run too slow for me. So I went back to XP. Luckily I made an image of XP's partition before installing Vista, so I could easily come back to XP if something wasn't good enough.

Vista rtm is fast except the shutdown time. RC1 was very slow I know. Just that I need the ATI drivers so badly.

XP is good if you don't try to fiddle with its settings. Even updating XP is not a good thing IMO. I would have used Windows 2003 Server if that damn I/O problem is not there. It was much more stable for me.

I still had the same problem in Bill Gates Version :)
You have to change the game's compatibility mode to 98/Me. Then it works, but slow. I couldn't play the game at 1280x960 in Vista with higher frame rate than 1600x1200 2X AA and 4X AF in XP.

GTRZ

Well when they release XP also we had problems with games, it was better in 98. But as XP comes more common, when drivers released, games more optimized to XP, then all started to go on with XP for gaming. So I think this time also we got to wait. Vista will do better in the future for sure!

Anyway as i think MS made Vista bit too futuristic, i mean imagining like lot of people have atleast computers over 2.5Ghz and around 1gig ram, VGAs at least like FX5500.
For my opinion still the specs are too high for the normal ppl. Anyway hardware manufacturers will love it ;)

Anusha
11-13-2006, 04:19 PM
But because of Vista, hardware prices will go down. Since Vista is a RAM monster, even 4GB RAM cards will come into play, and 1GB and 2GB cards will become cheaper. Same goes for all the other hardware device type.

as i see its getting cheap in the normal way. in same pace as b4. Even during last couple of months ram prices went sky rocket too. Its may be coz lot of demand for ram since ppl rushing for Vista.
Anyway i dont see any big price slash even in processors or VGAs etc.. all going down on the same pace as before. Anyway hope the manufacturers will fulfill the hardware demand caused by Vista. if not price will skyrocket again.

Can you both show us some screen shots with the frame rate with those settings. I want to check them with mine.

If you don't know how to show up the frame rate, download FRAPS (google it) and run it while playing Carbon.

nope man. You can really feel 15fps. Who said 15 fps has no lag at all? then man why should we go for high end cards looking for speed?

Anusha
11-13-2006, 08:13 PM
15fps is bad in every game...but in NFSC, it's playable.

GTRZ
11-13-2006, 08:25 PM
Even in NFSC "playable" and "no lag at all" are completely different things. As I felt it was hell lot better than 15fps. Anyway machan I’ll check and let you know the exact numbers.

I see. Max Settings doesn't set the AA to max I believe.

i gt enogh RAM and the hardware is ok,So i might install it.Bt I'm nt using it as the major OS for my wrx,dnt wanna screw up my stuffs.

I installed Vista as dual boot, in the morning. I wanted to test something that I forgot to do before.

We all know that the games are slow in Vista. (Except one game; FEAR, which is unreasonably faster in Vista) I know this is because of the beta drivers. I wanted to test if the ATI Catalyst drivers for XP would work on Vista. If I recall correctly, it worked on some of the previous builds. But those cool aero effects were disabled. I wouldn't mind living without those effects as long as the games would work as in XP.

Ok, I installed the drivers through device manager, by updating the current Vista WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) drivers. It asked to reboot. I rebooted. Guess what? I was warmly greated with a beloved Blue Screen of Death!!! So it didn't go well, eh? Damn! Luckily "Restore Last Known Good Configuration" in the F8 menu worked and the WDDM driver was loaded. Then I installed the ATI's beta driver because it's newer. Still the gaming performance sux. The Anti-Aliasing option in NFS Carbon is disabled. WTF!!! Even without AA, I can't run the game as good as XP.

I didn't try any other games. I know OpenGL support is not there in the driver yet, so playing Prey will be impossible at max details, if not medium details.

I still haven't activated it. Since I would fully migrate to Vista in a couple of months' time, I didn't want Microsoft to blacklist my key as we are not yet allowed to install Vista.

I don't see the animated desktop which was supposed to be in the final version. I guess it's a Vista Premium addition, which Microsoft haven't yet finialized. They are only coming in the final, final version :)

About NFS Carbon...It doesn't work in Vista unless you do any one of the following.
1. You can rename the movies folder in the installation dir. Movies won't play after that however.
2. Set the compatibility mode to 98/Me
I have only tested the 2nd option and I can confirm that it works. However, I don't know if that's responsible for the slower performance in Vista. Maybe I should rename the movies folder and see if that solves the performance issues.

Cheers...

How on earth can you install an operating system in a broken computer?

BTW, the only problem I have with Vista is the gaming performance, rather, the lack of it. I know 2GB of RAM would be nice, but I think with 1GB you can do everything without any problem.

Guess what dudes? I'm gonna install Vista as the main OS right now!!! I got most of the gaming issues solved. At least, now I can play NFS Carbon at 1280x960 4X AA etc. with reasonable frame rates. Sure, it was faster in XP. But I'd rather have one OS that two. Besides, these problems are expected at the launch of a new OS.
