Dr Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion participated at a function where commercial premises were formally handed over to their new tenants at the Kandy City Center, the hill capital’s premier commercial complex. These establishments which are located at Level 1 of the Centre, are large shopping areas and will be operated by branded companies and banks.
Speaking of the project, Dr Amunugama said that it was the single most important addition to Kandy since the times of the last dynasty of kings who ruled in the city. It was important that there are investors such as Mr. Thusitha Wijayasena willing to take risks to get projects done in spite of many hurdles they face. Private sector initiative often produces results. A project of this nature will encourage travel from Colombo to Kandy and, with better roads; the travel time will be reduced. Mr. Thusitha Wijayasena, Chairman/ Managing Director of Property Finance and Investments Kandy (pvt) Ltd added that he was keen to develop this project after his wife had convinced him of its importance to the city of Kandy.
As Kandy becomes even more attractive and better equipped with modern facilities, the potential for tourism, especially Convention Tourism will also be greatly enhanced, he added.
The Kandy City Centre is a BOI flagship project, approved by the Cabinet, located at Dalada Veediya, Kandy. Once completed it will be the mostly modern commercial complex in Sri Lanka and it represents an investment of US$ 100 million. The total area for the project is 44,000 square meters of floor area which will be made available to top level commercial establishments. Of the 10 levels, 6 will have road access. There will be many advanced features such as 14 escalators, 4 lifts, 3 Megawatt backup power, and an ultra modern security system.
The project is on a 12-acre land, which was earlier occupied by Walkers, a leading commercial establishment. The Chief architect, Mr. Ashley de Vos highlighted the need to preserve the beauty of the city of Kandy, to uphold the traditions of the up-country area while infusing much needed modernity. The Kandy City Center has thus been designed to blend in with the local buildings, combining modernity with the traditional Kandyan style of architecture. It is very much in harmony with the architecture and setting of the city.
The complex will have many of the leading banks, a fully equipped supermarket, a variety of restaurants, an entertainment zone and a state of the art food court. One section has been earmarked to develop tourism in Kandy. This level will feature handicraft manufacturers, gem dealers and jewellery manufacturers and tea producers.
One important feature of the project is the multi-storied car park, which will significantly relieve the congestion in the city of Kandy. It will be the largest and most modern in Sri Lanka and is connected to the main complex through an overhead bridge. The capacity of this car park is approximately 1,200 vehicles. The second phase of the project is the construction of 2 mini cinemas and a cultural hall.
The project will provide employment opportunities for 3,800 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs. The investor, Mr. Thusitha Wijayasena was very confident of the potential of the project. Because of its size and the high quality it will offer the public, the Kandy City Centre will play an important role in the life of the residents of that city. The grand opening of the project will be on 2nd August 2008.
