While windows Vista is out, and it is very slow compared to windows XP, most of the performance freaks are sticking with the good old windows XP, but still the performance of a standard windows XP installation can be improved by disabling some useless services and using a few registry tweaks. In this guide I will show you how to.

But first here are some very simple things that you can do just after installing XP, to improve performance
·Disable system restore (this can take up a lot of hard drive space and CPU cycles, and some viruses and spyware use this backup to hide themselves, use a professional backup software like acronis true image to safely backup your system)
·Disable file indexing service, this is a completely useless feature and it will only make your system run slower.
Disable ZIP preview - Makes you zip file filled folders load much much fasterto do this go to the command prompt and type in this command
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Run Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe in Run command), and search for Zipfldr.dll in the registry. Delete all instances of Zipfldr.dll found. There should be only one instance of it after unregistering.

Reboot the PC to unload the DLL from the memory

Delete the zipfldr.dll from windows/system32/dllcache folder and windows/system32 folder, click yes for the warning message and you are done

Disabling Services

Use the below list to safely disable the unwanted services of your new windows installation, im sorry if the list is so long but thats the way it is lool..

Options marked with a Star (*) are recommended setting for best performance.
