Mortal Kombat - you may have heard of it. This little fighter has been going strong since its violent (and therefore controversial) debut almost a decade ago. The game gained popularity not only through its use of real actors and gallons of blood, but also with its unique style that has evolved over three sequels. Mortal Kombat 4 is the latest incarnation in the series, and the PC's got it.

The obvious change in the franchise for this version is the switch from the videoclip cutouts to a fully 3D polygonal engine. What's amazing is that it still plays like a Mortal Kombat game even though the game has shifted from its roots. The 3D engine adds more dynamic camera angles, the ability to sidestep, and generally gives the action and animation a much smoother feel. There's also a handful of new fighters that join a rank of seven classic combatants, fifteen in all. Better still, this new incarnation also introduces weapons into the bout, though they seem a bit out of place.

The PC version of this game is an outstanding conversion. In fact, I'll go one step further and say that its even better than its arcade counterpart. Not just in graphics (which, with a Direct 3D card, look sharper than the original arcade game), but this home version introduces a few options not found in the machine. A good example is the 2 on 2 combat, a tag-team style game where another teammate jumps in when the first gets defeated. There's also a tournament mode for up to eight players, fighting through a competition tree to determine the victor. And for those who can't stand reading through the manual, there's an on-screen moves guide that can be pulled up at any time during the battle -- pretty handy if you haven't crammed all those special maneuvers into your brain yet.

I'm only going to kick this conversion for one specific reason -- no network play. It would have been great to play your buddy remotely. Sadly, the only way you're going to get accurate two-player action is to own two Sidewinder pads. And don't even try to play this game on the keyboard -- not only will it cramp your style, but you'll also look like a complete idiot hunched over the keys trying to mash a four-finger combo.

Mortal Kombat 4 is the apology to Midway's last Mortal Kombat effort (anyone remember Trilogy?). Put simply, the game is the best home conversion of the title available, even when compared to the excellent N64 and PlayStation versions.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End

It's almost hard to believe in this day and age of movie and game tie-ins, but other than a couple of handheld games, the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie didn't have a companion game on consoles. Disney Interactive Studios is making up for lost time with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which features plotlines from both the second and third Pirates movies. While the game does a solid job of capturing the look and humor of the movies, it fails to emulate the films' action sequences very well. The combat is extremely simple, and you'll grow tired of mashing on the attack button well before you reach the end of the game.

A nuke as been stolen. Some female named Ekk along with various military people want to use it, which naturally is a no-no for us peace loving John Doe's You, being a regular good guy, with an english accent (!) you're out to put a stop to this. Your greatest help, besides your accordingly very mobile collection of very deadly weapons you have a friend in the agency you work for by the name of Anya. She's a nuclear psysicist along with other fairly hard skills and she announces the briefing and helps you during the mission. She's a sexy woman and there flies a couple of sparks between them now and then, hehe. During the 14 missions of the game quite alot happens, so even though the story is pretty thin the sequences between the missions are interesting, if not even exciting.

Commandos: BCOD's gameplay follows the same style as its predecessor. Instead, players assume control of one to six distinctive commandos, such as the marksman Duke and the explosives expert Inferno, and use them collectively to solve puzzle-like combat and stealth situations.

Though the units, both friendly and enemy, are rather small, they're easily distinguishable against the lush, detailed environments. This is a nifty little game that's easy on the KB (and the system requirements) but it's pretty addicting. It features over 20 different tracks with support for racing against your ghosts, it has realistic physics (it really does except it doesn't have a crash model, everything just bounces away) and it also features an elaborate track editor and bike editor, most appreciable if you are a MX rider but fun nevertheless. The game already comes registered and ready to play.

Instructions:

The game boots to BgrTrack but you can change the track anytime you want from the menu at the top, the Edit file lets you access the track and bike editor as well as different cameras.

Controls: You accelerate and brake by moving the cursor up or down and you steer with the mouse, it's pretty simple, additionally you can perform tricks with A, S, D, F, G, H and you can rotate and zoom the camera with the arrow keys.

* Rockstar have claimed the "modding community will be supported." Specifically in what ways is yet to be seen.


A great part of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the possiblity to modify it: Rockstar claims to have left important game data files unlocked and in text files as opposed to hard-coding them in the game. Although Rockstar lists "player modifications support" as a feature, it's safe to assume that Rockstar will not be providing any game editors with the game, and we can expect to be able to import additional player skins, probably in the form of clothes. Player models are at the moment split into around 10 different pieces, with two of each for different fitness levels. As such, player skins as seen in GTA Vice City are unlikely, unless we are provided with a custom slot with a single static mesh skin. Bear in mind that this is simply speculation at this point, as nothing solid has been confirmed yet.

It was decided that the PC version of San Andreas will not have an inbuilt 2-player mode as "the dual keyboard and mouse set up proved too unwieldy for players and didn't work with the PC version of San Andreas' greatly improved free camera mechanics. Rockstar North decided to focus on maximizing the single player experience

Description
The game is a mix of first-person shooting and third-person lightsaber combat, with a heavy focus of the latter over the former. Players are allowed to customize the basic look of their character by choosing from a list of heads, torsos, and legs. Moreover, players can now customize the look of their lightsaber hilt in addition to the blade color, though all of these customizations are aesthetic only. Answering overwhelming fan demand, players now have the option of fighting with two lightsabers or the double lightsaber made famous by Darth Maul. The flashy new lightsaber combat styles are a lot of fun and make duels twice as entertaining. Players are able to use a set of Force powers such as Push, Pull, and Speed, that should be familiar to anyone who has watched the Star Wars movies. Ironically, players can learn and use Light Side and Dark Side powers like Heal or Lightning interchangeably without any real restriction or consequence. The single-player story line is fairly thin but adequately does the job of giving you an excuse to visit a variety of diverse environments and cut through bad guys by the boatload.

Age of Mythology (commonly abbreviated as AoM), is a mythology-based, real-time strategy computer game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was released on November 1, 2002 in North America and a week later in Europe.

Age of Mythology focuses less on historical accuracy than previous games in the Age of Empires series, but instead centers upon the myths and legends of the Greeks, Egyptians, and Norse. Sniper Elite takes place in 1945, at the close of the war. The game focuses on the conflict between Russia and Germany for control of Berlin. The Russian secret service, known as NKVD, is in town to steal the atomic-bomb technology from the German Army. You have to put a stop to that posthaste, because nuclear weapon technology in the hands of Stalin's forces would surely spell big trouble for just about the entire world. You are an American sniper, trained by the OSS to be the best of the best when it comes to covert operations. Disguised as a German soldier, you have to stop the NKVD at all costs. The single-player campaign is quite lengthy. There are 28 missions in a variety of different (but very similar) war-torn settings. The missions are pretty much what you'd expect from a sniper game. You'll have to assassinate high-ranking officials, steal secret documents, rescue captured allies, and shoot hundreds of guys in the head. The campaign can easily take 12 hours or more to finish. If you complete all the optional objectives and take the time to set up all your shots rather than just blast away recklessly, this game will easily take up as much time as you're willing to give it. Therein lies the conundrum with this game. If you play it carefully, a single level can take much more than an hour to complete. The stealth is well done here, and the game does a great job of building up the sense of tension that comes from sneaking around and picking off enemies. After a while, though, that tension fades into tedium, and you'll eventually just be wishing you could move on already.

The missions aren't particularly satisfying, either. Some of the more complex missions are great, like when you have to climb your way up a cathedral tower and snipe enemy soldiers as they rush your ally, who's stuck waiting for transport. The problem is that most of the missions are rather anticlimactic. You'll spend a long time fighting through as many as six or seven fairly simple but time-consuming objectives, only to have the final objective be something as simple and unexciting as walking to the ex-filtration point, unchallenged, so you can exit the level.

Another problem with the missions is that they require a lot of trial and error to really figure out what you're supposed to do. You'll die several times while trying to figure out what the best position is to complete your objectives, or where enemies will be coming from. This means you'll replay the same mission several times, even on the easiest difficulty. This is especially frustrating when you go through 20 minutes or more of buildup, only to have the guy you were supposed to assassinate get spooked and run away. Then you have to go through that 20-minute buildup all over again. Luckily, you can save anywhere you want and at any time, though you do have a limited number of saves per mission. You'll want to save often so you don't have to keep going over your same tracks every time you die.


Headshots are the order of the day in Sniper Elite.

You'll die a lot, too, because as a sniper you aren't equipped to take much damage. A few rounds from a machine gun at close range are more than enough to put you down. You can find bandages and medikits on the ground and by searching corpses, but healing items are few and far between. The enemy artificial intelligence here is deviously intelligent, as well. In fact, the AI is almost too intelligent sometimes; they have an uncanny sense of where you are at all times, even when you've gone to great lengths to remain concealed. The enemies in the game don't often just stand there and wait for you to pop them in the head. Enemies run for cover, crouch, and lay down, and they'll even work together to pull some dirty tricks. For instance, a group of enemies might keep you occupied while another enemy sneaks around behind you and unloads a clip in your back before you can even turn around to see what's happening. If you shoot an enemy in the leg, he'll fall to the ground and squirm around while shouting for help. If you don't finish him off right away, another enemy will pick up his fallen comrade and carry him to safety. The game does a great job of making the enemies seem crafty and intelligent. A good deal of the challenge here is derived from the fact that it's usually far more effective to outfox your enemies than it is to outgun them.
