COLOMBO: AT LEAST NINE PERSONNEL including six Police officers were feared killed and over eighty men and women have been injured in the LTTE suicide blast that occurred near SRI SAMBUDDHALOKA VIHARYA, COLOMBO- FORT Friday (16) mid-noon when an LTTE suicide bomber rammed a stationary stand-by bus that had Police officers of the riot squad team.

Thee women Police officers, three Police constables and three civilians died in the explosion, according to the latest information. The Police bus was to serve the area in the event of an emergency in connection with a public protest, scheduled to be staged by the main opposition party in COLOMBO – FORT this afternoon.

Two buses, including the Police riot squad bus were affected by the suicide explosion, believed to have been triggered by a motorbike-riding Tiger suicide cadre. Several pieces of flesh belonging to the LTTE suicide bomber have already been recovered and referred for investigations.

Two three-wheelers, a small truck and another motorbike passing the location have been hit by the explosion, according to the latest reports. The powerful blast that emitted huge palls of smoke and shook nearby buildings has been triggered by the motorbike suicide cadre, aiming at the stationary Police vehicle, initial investigations said.

The area remains cordoned and barricaded at the moment, enabling law forcemeat authorities and the government analyst to conduct inspection and investigations.

However, hospital sources maintain condition of at least another ten Police constables and civilians is critical and needs urgent surgeries. Over sixty pints of blood have been infused to the injured so far according to the hospital. Eight personnel died in the Intensive Care Unit.

The latest LTTE carnage comes in the wake of a series of battle-front defeats continued to be suffered by Tiger terrorist in Wanni and elsewhere. Fire-fighting vehicles, ambulances and many other private vehicles supported the evacuation and prevention of further spread of fire that emanated from the blast.

The Inspector General of Police visited the COLOMBO National hospital a few minutes after his men were brought to the hospital.
