In an attempt to understand Sri Lankan people's thoughts and maybe to learn from each other....please post your replies with:

EXACT Model:
Stock Speed:
Currently running speed: (unless you have overclocked, it's the same speed as stock)
Time of purchase:
Price you paid for it:
And reasons behind your choice:

I'll go first.

Model: Intel Core2Duo E6300
Stock Speed: 1.86GHz
Current speed: 1.86GHz (not overclocked)
Time of purchase: 2006 Q4
Price: Rs.23,500
Why: Low power consumption with admirable performance; better multitasking with dual cores; AthlonX2 3800 wasn't available for purchase; very goo

Good setup, but that's not what i asked  And, US$2000 for that setup looks too much. But I don't know the other components. They might add up. And the motherboad doesn't support FSB1333MHz btw.

I only need the CPU info. Open another thread to talk about your setup.

Too bad the parts are expensive there. At least you have the parts no? Here, you have to be extremely lucky to find the parts as well as get a good deal.

And....that motherboard doesn't support FSB1333. There is only one chipset that supports that FSB, and it is not yet released to the market. nVidia nForce 680i is that chipset.

You know, you will be better off with a good video card than a CPU upgrade, as you have onboard video. No point spending so much money on gaming components than the only thing that matters these days: a highend video card. 3GHz isn't too bad, and you can overclock it to around 3.6GHz if you are lucky and even more if you are really really lucky. 3.6GHz P4 can easily run every game out there at good performance.

2.7GHz? I think the real speed is 2.66GHz, right? Wow, 1.3GHz to 2.66GHz?. I went from a 500MHz k6-2 to a 2600+ which I could overclock to the 3000+'s level of performance, but not identical specs as the 3000+ has a 512kB L2 cache and mine has 256kB L2 cache. That was a huge jump!!!

If its gaming performance then go for RAM. At least 2Gigs of it. Having a gud video card improves quality but if ya dont hav the Ram to ack it up it'll slow thing down big time

RAM is only needed if you play at high resolutions. To play at high resolutions, you need a very good graphics card.

For example, if you have a Geforce 7600GT + 1GB RAM and 7600GS + 2GB RAM with everything else being identical, for games, 1GB RAM + 7600GT is a lot faster. You won't get image stuttering because of paging effect with 2GB, of course. But to be honest, on XP, with 1GB RAM, I can play every games except battlefield 2 and 2142 without stuttering at 1280x960 and full details. Only if you play games like FEAR, Oblivion, Battlefield 2/2142 at 1280x960 resolution or more, you won't notice performance let down in GAMES. But remember you can't have something like Maya8 or Photoshop open while playign games with 1GB ;)

No, no. Don't misunderstand.

The CPU you have represents either your wealth, availability of the CPU in Sri Lankan markets, what type of things you do with your CPU, how much you research before you buy, how much you care, how you choose between substitutes etc. I want to know what it is.

But you know, what if you get very unlucky and get a CPU that wouldn't overclock well? And you need very good RAM to aid your overclocking. That motherboard is intended at extreme overclockers, who would spend anything to get that extra 1 frame per second performance gain in their favourite games. If you buy that motherboard, you better be buying at least a 2.4GHz Core2Duo, 2GB DDR2-1066, at least a Geforce8800GTS. Otherwise, it's no point.

And do you know how much that motherboard will be? It's gonna retail at around US$350 and in Sri Lanka, you'll have to pay at least Rs.50,000!!!! Go buy a video card

The best overclocking motherboard you can buy in Sri Lanka is the Gigabyte DS3 or DS4 or DQ6. DS3 has only one PCI-E x16 slot. Other two has 2 for ATI CrossFire. Sure, nForce 680i chipset will reach 2GHz+ FSB, but DS3 can reach 2GHz too. AS I said before, it all comes down to the CPU's capabilities and the RAM. If you have DDR2-800, you can only go to 1.6GHz FSB with 2x multiplier, even with that Striker motherboard. For all those huge FSBs, you will have to spend Rs.20,000+ for 1GB RAM and an after market cooler, a good power supply with ~600W etc. Go dream yourself, or invest on that video card. You already have a PCI-E slot no? Why ditch that motherboard for an extra 10% CPU power?

No no man. If I install another 1GB ram PC will slow down than early. Dont know why?

There could be a reason. Some chipsets will go back to a slower RAM speed when more RAM is installed. It's a chipset incapability. You might be able to change the RAM speeds manually in the BIOS if it lets you do it and if this is the reason why it's running slow.

This is correct too. But if you are lucky, you will be able to overclock the slower RAM.

Here are two example from my previous PC (motherboard).
1. When I have all 4 DDR slots full, all RAM would workat DDR266 even when all are DDR400
2. If I have up to 3 slots full, I will be limited by the slowest RAM I have. In my case, it was a 256MB DDR333 with two 512MB DDR400. All will run at DDR333.
3. But my DDR333 could work at DDR400 speeds with the same latencies as the DDR400. So when I set the speeds and latencies manually (you have to experiment with this and stress test for few hours using Memtest86+), I could ran all of them DDR400 speeds.
4. But when I installed the other 256MB which was a DDR266, but this also could run at DDR400 speed, I couldn't overclock it even to 270MHz.

It could be any of these two reasons.

AthlonXP 2600+ Thoroughbred "B" core with 256kB L2
It was factory unlocked. So I could change the multiplier. Original specs were 133x16 = 2133MHz and I overclocked it to 196x11=2156MHz. That's almost a 50% increase in FSB.

Are you kidding me? I bought my last PC with a AthonXP 2600+ in 2003 May!!! At that time, they had the 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz Intel CPUs and 2600+ was the fastest at Rs.19,000.

You know, the maximum clock speed attained by a A64 3200 Venice is over 1GHz than ur max clocks.

Well, not really. I couldn't get mine to 2.2GHz :(
2.2GHz wasn't prime stable. I only could increase the FSB keeping the clock speed at stock (=2.133; 133*16)(or slightly above stock). Luckily it was unlocked. So I could lower the multi to 11. 10 and 10.5 didn't allow it to P.O.S.T. :(
