The story-
This song was originally sung by Terry Jacks, In 90s it was reproduced by westlife.
These lyrics were taken from the diary of Jacques Brel who was having cancer, he wrote this words when he was in the hospital dying with cancer.
So listen and read this song thinking about this story.
Finally
This song is dedicated to all the people who are suffering from the pain of cancer......
(they are like people who are living but also dying.....
And if u can make a donation to the on going hope cancer hospital project in Sri Lanka..

I'm so sorry for the dissapointment buddy!:nerd:
I personally don't like westlife..
(I don't like because they do the same song form old singers
and without mentioning thir name! Like Uptown Girl by Billy Joel.. and this one!)
Because of that I can't express my feelings freely
even though the song has a good meaning
Please forgive me my friend!

Nice work bro! Keep going.
We can really see the thoughts ruining through the mind of this dying writer.
How he wishes goodbye to the world, how he reminds about the past and saying goodbye to everyone he loved. Nice literature.

actually I think we dont have to neglect this saying this been stolen by the original singer because this is really a nice song...I have to be thankful to Ravi malli for posting this kind of a soul touching song ....as I do feel westlife hassen done a injustice for the original singer either by changing all chords or the adding rap part or so on as our Sl artists do:P
One reason for me to love this song is its hidden story..its so tragic the way writer saying goodbye to all of his relations and friends ..But he doesnt wanna go but he has to go...its so terrible to feel some thing like that...any how its a great song which nicely present the uncertainty of life ...we dont know when we happen to say good bye..but living we are dying is so hard to cope up with..but he nice bring that feeling in to his words....
this part is so touching
Goodbye papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along
As I feel some time one of hardest pain I ve ever seen is for a mam or dad seeing his or her son or daughter dying...because its a untimely death..because its not what should happen...we have seen lot of mother and dads crying in sri lanka because of this bloody war....so i can imagine what kind of pain this song might have given to the true writers father....cant even imagine....
finally this is life.....spending seasons under the sun learning abc s:(

Seosons in the sun!
It's a really hard feeling to understand for us the position of a person
who knows he's dying... It's a very hard to bear such a feeling...
But the artist understands That he's not going to live for long...
But the beauty is
without getting worried, the person is happy about the time he spend on earth!
And saing Good Bye to every one like he's trying to reduce their pain of his diparture
Like Hiding the pain inside and smile:D to make other people happy!

Actually this song was originally written in french by this dying french singer and song writer Jacques Brel.
Its really touching. The name of the song is "Le moribond" in english translation - "The Dying Man"
He saying this to his wife. His songs english translation goes like this.
Good-bye, my wife, I loved you well
Good-bye, my wife, I loved you well, you know,
But I'm taking the train for the Good Lord,
I'm taking the train before yours
But you take whatever train you can;
Goodbye, my wife, I'm going to die,
It's hard to die in springtime, you know,
But I'm leaving for the flowers with my eyes closed, my wife,
Because I closed them so often,
I know you will take care of my soul.
Now we are listening to the Canadian Terry Jacks version of the song which has changed like this..
Goodbye, Michelle, my little one,
You gave me love and helped me find the sun,
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground;
Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air,
Whiff of flowers ev'rywhere,
I wish that we could both be there!
He has changed the lyrics like its for an girl friend or a young daughter. And has removed parts like "I'm taking the train before yours,
But you take whatever train you can, Goodbye, my wife, I'm going to die"
Here is a pic of Jacques Brel the original writer.

First of all I must say that I am not much interest in English songs. I normally listen to those and forget it at the same time.
Well I when I talk with Ravi malli regarding this week song he said that he is going to use this song and he gave me the Mp3 of this. I was attracted by its music then I got the lyrics, Ravi asks me to guess the background of this song. What I said was it must be regarding a soldier who is in the battle field. But I was wrong and ravi malli told me that seed of this song has been taken from a cancer patient’s diary. But finally my guess was bit closer to the truth. Because it expresses the feelings of a person who is waiting for the death.
“out out brief candle! Life’s but
A walking shadow, a poor player
That’s struts and frets his hour
Upon the stage” (Macbeth-v.5 by William Shakespeare.)
While I was writing this comment a girl came to my mind. She was suffering from an unknown disease. While in the ward she wrote a message to her friends “mata merenna baya ne eth ubalawa daala yanna dukai”
I think there isn’t much difference between the above incident and this poem..! Personally I don’t have such experience so I don’t know how those people face to it..!
What I know is it is so much difficult to say good bye to somebody who is much attached to us. But next moment we can be happy because there are others to share our life. But for a person who knows that he or she is going to die sooner and got to say goodbye for the friends, family, and all and finally the life too how it would be?
This song shows it superbly. But not in a sorrowful way but in touching way..!
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the wine and the songs like the
Seasons have all gone
This is my favorite part of this song. What else to say its brilliant! There are so many ups and downs – success and short comes in one’s life. But Life is still rolling. ”Jeewithaya gena wandanawaka yanna apa yanawoo”
PS> I think as Sri Lankans we all can sing this song together. As Our lifes with bombs are not much differnt with a cancer patiants life with the sickness.:P
sorry abt the grammer and spelling mistakes!

This is oone of those songs that could leave a deep mark in you heart, the melody, and specially for someone like me who's first language is not English, simple & clearly understandable words, give you a lasting impression, for me it's like love @ first sight. I came across this song for the first time, about 10yrs ago, while listening to Lite / Gold FM in my car. That's the original version, then I saw Westlife version over Mtv. I still remember those instances..........so is the intensity of this song. I can remember few songs which had impact me in this manner.
Melody & lyrics both give you a meloncholy sort of feeling, yet you try to get parallel with them and try to live with the song, try to be the main cast of the story (This is the way I felt, even though I write this in third person), then, once the song is over, you feel like switch off the radio & take a deep breath..........more you listen to this song more deppressed you get...........I dont know if it's a good or bad thing. Now, Thanx to Ravi, I know the story behind the song......and could get more deppressed.
When I first listened to this song, I didnt really comprehend the verse for his Dad , mainly, back in SL we were made to believe that Westerners do not have close family ties. Since then, I have ganed a slight understanding about the family ties in Western culture & also I have a son myself now. This help me to understand the intensity of the verse for his Dad.
All & all a great song, I'm sure this song will echo in my ear & my heart for the next few days or may be weeks........................
Thanx Ravi for walking us this path......................

first of all i dont listen to english songs much.but when i saw a trd to ask to reply this i open this trd and read the lyrics. looks cool for me and then i listen to the mp3.
close ur eyes and listen. it make u cry. it brought tears to my eyes.
i like it cuz it express how hard say good bye to ur relations and freinds. damn it is so hard.
"""Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time. """
""" We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun ""
this part remembering me to my old school days and days spending after AL in SL.
and as sampath says... cant imagine how a father or mother seeing his or her sun or daugheter dying......cant imagine....in SL we have to seen this because of this bloody war.
"" Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die "" imagine if a father had to hear this from his sun.omg.....
and can u guys imagine a persons mentality in this situation.
hmm...
good song and thanx for sharing malli.
