Its a file sharing protocol!

Refer to this link for more information.. But, If you looking for this information for an academic research I recommend you refer to the references of the this Wikipedia page!

Downloading torrents and sharing files

Users browse the web to find a torrent of interest, download it, and open it with a BitTorrent client. The client connects to the tracker(s) specified in the torrent file, from which it receives a list of peers currently transferring pieces of the file(s) specified in the torrent. The client connects to those peers to obtain the various pieces. Such a group of peers connected to each other to share a torrent is called a swarm. If the swarm contains only the initial seeder, the client connects directly to it and begins to request pieces. As peers enter the swarm, they begin to trade pieces with one another, instead of downloading directly from the seeder.

µTorrent (also microTorrent or uTorrent) is a freeware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeware), closed source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprietary_software), BitTorrent client (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client) for Microsoft Windows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows) (and Linux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux) under Wine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%28software%29)) written in C++ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%2B%2B)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTorrent#cite_note-0) and localized for many different languages. It is designed to use minimal computer resources while offering functionality comparable to larger BitTorrent clients such as Azureus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azureus) or BitComet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitComet).
The program has received consistently good reviews for its feature set, performance, stability, and support for older hardware and versions of Windows. It has been in active development since its first release in 2005. Its name is commonly abbreviated "µT" or "uT".
On December 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_7), 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006), µTorrent developer Ludvig Strigeus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludvig_Strigeus) and BitTorrent, Inc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent%2C_Inc.) CEO Bram Cohen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bram_Cohen) announced that BitTorrent, Inc. had acquired µTorrent.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTorrent#cite_note-purchase-1) BitTorrent, Inc. has employed the code as the basis of version 6.0 of the BitTorrent client (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_%28software%29) which makes it a re-branded version of µTorrent.

bittorrent is a medium to share files. you need a specialised software to do this, one of the famous bittorrent clients are utorrent. www.utorrent.com/ (http://www.utorrent.com/)

and when you need to download a certain file, you need to find a torrent file for that file. it contains information where the needed file is situated. http://thepiratebay.org/ is a popular torrent indexing site.

And then open the torrent from your torrent software to download. But to get a good download speed, you need to optimize your software settings.

hope this is a practical answer.

ah one thing...!!! ISPs and music and cinema artists hate torrents and torrent users!!!!

(correct me if i'm wrong)
