Sri Lankan umpire Asoka de Silva will return back to international duties after a four year layoff when he officiates during the up coming Tri Series limited overs tournament between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to be worked off in Dhaka from June 8 to 14.
De Silva was promoted to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Elite Panel following the body’s decision to expand the pool from 10 to 12 umpires.
The former leg spinner was one of eight full-time umpires selected for the ICC’s Elite Panel when it was first introduced in 2002. But he was relegated in early 2004 after having stood in 33 Test matches and 76 one day internationals.
However he remained as a member of the ICC International Umpires Panel and was often appointed to matches to support the Panel during busy periods in the international cricket season.
De Silva who has umpired in two World Cups in 2003 and 2007 has returned after having performed outstandingly on the international scene during the past 12 months is regarded as Sri Lanka’s best umpire after a successful cricket career from 1985 to 1992 where he represented the country in 10 Test matches and 28 one day internationals.
