Sri Lanka's government has accused Tamil Tiger terrorists of attacking a historic Buddhist temple in the eastern part of the country.

A government statement said the rebels had fired small arms towards the Somawathi shrine, about 170km (105 miles) north-east of Colombo on Monday.

The Tamil Tigers have denied any involvement in the attack.

Separately, the Tamil Tigers have said they are committed to a four-year truce despite a surge in violence.

We have committed to the ceasefire agreement and Norway's facilitation role,

S Puleedevan, chief of the Tiger peace secretariat said.

The government statement said the Tigers had attacked the shrine to try to "arouse the sentiments of the Sinhalese Buddhists against the innocent Tamils to cause Sinhalese-Tamil strife".

"On retaliation by security forces guarding the sacred site, the insurgents fled the scene, abandoning yet another attempt to create a backlash," the statement said.
