Defence Secretary narrowly escapes LTTE assassination attempt

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had a narrow escape this morning when the LTTE suicide bomber attempted to assassinate him. His vehicle was badly damaged and at least one of the bodyguards died on the spot.

The bomb blast in Kollupitiya, Colombo injured seven Army personnel and seven civilians. One Army personnel is in very serious condition.

The injured are under treatment at the Colombo General Hospital.

The incident is apparently a suicide attack where a three wheeler has knocked on to the convoy of vehicles of the Defence Secreatry. The destroyed parts of the three-wheeler was scattered at the scene.

Police are investigating the crime scene.

The blast took place at a busy commercial centre of capital. The bomb has targeted Mr Rajapaksa’s vehicle convoy and reportedly one army commando was killed.

Defence Secretary in his blood splattered shirt later visited his brother, President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees.
