The Condemned (2007)


A tv company is gathering 10 convicts from death row on an island. They will fight to the death until one is left alive. It is a action movie well worth a peek.
Although it has been done before the concept is pretty good, people are put together on an island, to survive they have to kill eachother. The twist is that the fight on the island is being monitored by the world with the tv company having a goal to make people pay to see the macabre event. To keep the "contestants" from stalling the show they are given an anclebracelet with explosives that will go off in a few hours. So the killing has to happen fast. And the hunt begins.

I liked the movie, the concept is a valid one in this internet age. The main character is a cliche buff undercover ex-militairy american. But it works because his role is a very small one. Vinnie Jones plays the total psycho killing everyone as brutaly as he can and he does it in a very credible way.

Well worth the time and a thought provoking movie about where the world is heading when it comes to entertainment. Maybe this is next...

Synopsis :
Aditya (Shahid Kapur), a defeated industrialist, is even more broken as the girl he loves is getting married. Unable to muster up the courage to return home, he drifts out of the gathering and aimlessly boards a train, bounding away into the night. As destiny would have it, on the train he meets Geet (Kareena Kapoor) – a beautiful but annoyingly talkative girl who is leaving Mumbai to go her hometown – Bhatinda (Punjab). Later, she has plans of eloping with her boyfriend. Geet irritates Aditya to the point of getting him to leave the train. As she tries to get him back on the train, she ends up missing it and the two find themselves stranded on a desolate station with no luggage or money. Begins the idyllic journey through the exuberant North Indian heartland in which this odd couple will make their way through buses and taxis and camel-carts, crossing Highways and deserts and lakes, meeting all kinds of people, to reach her house in Punjab. On arrival, Geet's family mistakes the two for lovers. Before this misconception can be cleared, Geet escapes to her boyfriend in Manali. Aditya leaves with her, confirming the suspicion that they are lovers. In Manali, Aditya feels empowered to return to Mumbai and resurrect his ailing business. Life takes a positive turn and Aditya begins to do well. One day Geet's family who think that she is with him confronts Aditya. He is shocked to learn that Geet has not returned home. He takes it upon himself to find her. He finally tracks her down in a Himalayan town and begins another journey to reach Bhatinda and flow into the colors and conceptions of a loud and happy North Indian family!How their separate journeys become one, forms the destination of JAB WE MET, a beautiful and captivating saga of made-for-each-other love. Lilting, musical, amusing and packed with mischievous contrivances – this breezy fun-filled romantic comedy set in cultural North India looks like it's ready to recreate the magical era of the 90s, in the form of Aditya and Geet, being essayed by real-life lovebirds, Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

Artists Performance

Main Leads: Debutant hero Vishal (son of GK Reddy who produced films like SP Parusuram & M Dharmaraju MA) does well in the role of a leading character. Though a first timer, he is at ease with camera and possesses natural histrionics ability. Reema Sen is sexier in sarees as housewife than as a glamorous heroine in western dresses. There is good amount of scope for performance and she enlivened it up.

Others: Bharat (Boys & Yuvasena fame) is good as obsessive lover of a girl who is much elder to him. At the same time, he also makes sure that there is a bit of innocence associated with his character. Vivek is entertaining as the friend of Vishal. Venu Madhav's dubbing to Vivek establishes in getting the comedy punches right. Girish Karnad is adequate. Mumtaj & Bhanu Priya did guest roles.

Technical Departments:

Story: This story has strong resemblance to the main theme of mythological epic Ramayana. Vishal, Reema Sen and Bharat enact the roles of Ram, Seeta and Ravana respectively. Our writers say that Ramayana and Mahabharata form the origins of majority of film stories in India. This film is another example.

Screenplay - direction: Screenplay by Gandhi Krishna is superior with fast-paced narration. Direction of the film is also good. The first half of the film concentrates on romantic escapades between the lead pair and the second half has a bit of suspense factor about how hero traces heroine.

Other departments: Music by Harris Jayaraj is an asset. The tunes as well as background score are good. KV Anand's cinematography is another plus point. Picturization of the songs is good. Wonder why the blue lagoons and the beaches of Andaman Islands are less explored in foreign-locations-crazy Telugu films. The Andaman Islands are well exploited in the second song of this film. The set work is also good. Dialogues by Vennelakanti are adequate.

Analysis:

The first half of the film is engaging. The second half goes on slow mode. The concept of a guy snatching away heroine resembles us of films like Guna and Nenu. These kinds of storylines (second half) do not go well with regular Telugu film crowds. The plus points of the film are Reema Sen, music and selection of a storyline that involves post-marital life of lead pair. This film being a dubbed one is a disadvantage. Tarun in few scenes leaves his mark. Photograthy by PC Sreeram is another highlight of the film.

Too many stars spoil the movie!!

What applies to the cooks and broth applies to stars and movie too. Dus was a disappointment to say the least. The only saving grace is the soundtrack... especially the title track.

The storyline was the same old Bollywood formula. The casting was OK but their acting was terrible! Sanjay Dutt looks bored all through the movie. He is better as a munnabhai or a Raghu Shivalkar. Shilpa Shetty's role is quite forgettable. The grunge clothes and the fake tattoos don't really go well on her. AB Jr and Zayed Khan looked hot. Isha Deol was horrible!! First half of the movie was still bearable... second half was more torturous on the audience than on the villains!!! The best part of the movie was Pankaj Kapur. His acting was brilliant. Too bad that its wasted on a movie like this.

I'd advise you to wait for the DVD to come out. Don't buy it. Just rent it... watch the title track (excellent choreography) and then just return it! ****

Bollywood Fun

Family is a hugely entertaining example of Bollywood's ability to extract ideas from American movies and turn them into something distinctly Indian. The film deftly extracts elements from American action blockbusters and expertly blends them with the comedy, romance and music usually associated with Bollywood. The film follows the lives of two very different families and examines the tragic consequences that arise when they accidentally become intertwined. Despite the fact that the film involves murder, kidnapping and various other tragedies, it somehow manages to remain remarkably upbeat.

A real highlight of the film is the cast. I have always thought that Amitabh Bachchan vaguely resembles Al Pacino and as the cruel gangster Viren Sahi, he gets an opportunity to do his best Pacino impression. Mr Bachchan makes a pretty hilarious gangster, looking vaguely ridiculous with blond highlights in his hair and a collection of suits that Liberace would find vulgar. While he may not be particularly convincing during the action sequences, Amitabh Bachchan comes into his own during the more dramatic moments and proves yet again that he is the most entertaining actor working in India today.

The ubiquitous Ashkay Kumar plays Shekhar, Viren Sahi's polar opposite. If Amitabh Bachchan is the Indian Al Pacino, then Ashkay Kumar is the Bollywood version of David Hasselhoff - an all singing and dancing entertainment train wreck. The scene in which Ashkay performs a hip hop number (complete with bling diamanté sunglasses) on the top of a temple has to be seen to be believed. Aryeman debuts as Shekhar's brother, Aryan. It's good to see that nepotism is alive and well in India as Aryeman also happens to be the producer's son. Surprisingly, Aryeman is an unexpectedly good actor and manages to be convincing in the film's most demanding role.

In addition to fabulous musical segments, which take place everywhere from the above mentioned temple to a porn site in cyberspace, Family also contains several memorable fight sequences and a couple of well constructed car chases. A scene in which Aryan abseils down a skyscraper before swinging through a glass window would make Michael Bay green with envy. Bollywood films are not for everyone, the mixing of genres can be disconcerting and the long running times may seem unnecessary. However, if you are the mood to try something different, Family is a good place for western viewers to start.

When the title "Based on true practices" appears, we know we're in for a harrowing time. This is an issue film that dares to address an unspeakably horrible tradition in remote parts of India. The central characters are Maya (Shetty) and Sanjay (Yadav), cousins raised as siblings by Sanjay's loving parents (Nag and Vasisht). Maya and Sanjay play all day in both the rocky wilderness and dense forest near their village, where they also have fun annoying the shopkeepers. Then at age 13 Maya gets her first period and everything changes. They go to visit her real mother (Navalkar) and arrange a womanhood ceremony with the local priest (Saxenda). But Sanjay senses something is not right, and sets out to rescue Maya from what everyone else just accepts as a part of growing up. The film opens with the sounds of Maya screaming in the temple, then jumps back to show her free-spirited life with Sanjay. The story could have been told in about 30 minutes, but we instead get nearly two hours of scene setting. And the result is powerful, as the film's early warnings are stoked by Sanjay's growing fear and the women's increasingly sober resignation as they prepare Maya for the ceremony. And yet we're still unprepared to face what actually happens. There's never even a hint, so when we find out, it's nearly unbearable. The beauty of this life and culture is shattered ... and even more when the priest emerges to announce that "God has truly blessed Maya." Akshay strikes again

Akshay Kumar, India's answer to David Hasselhof, stars in yet another Bollywood melodrama about a doomed love triangle. Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye is one of his least entertaining efforts, mainly due to the fact that the film lacks the action sequences which make Akshay's films bearable. Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye revolves around a pretty standard love triangle. Akshay plays Aditya, an auto engineer who is engaged to Soniya, a fashion designer. While on a business trip to Canada, Aditya falls in love with Jia, who in turn, is engaged to the rich and powerful Karan. Everything proceeds rather predictably, with Jia and Aditya slowly becoming closer without being unfaithful to their fiancés.

The film is not particularly bad, just overly formulaic and unusually boring. Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye focuses on the developing romance between Aditya and Jai, ignoring the usual action sequences that Akshay is famous for. There is only one fight scene in which Aditya battles three thieves. The musical interludes are also less entertaining than usual. There is a fun musical number in a restaurant when the family drink spiked juice and another hilariously over the top segment in which Aditya and Jia sing while riding a motorbike and dance on top of snowy mountain peaks. Unfortunately, such scenes are few and far between.

In addition to the inimitable Akshay, the cast includes several rising Bollywood stars. Katrina Kaif is lovely as the emotionally torn Jia, while the ridiculously beautiful Bipasha Basu shines as bitchy Soniya. Vivek Shaq also offers some much needed comedy relief as Nawab. Despite these fine performances, the film really revolves around Ashkay and he provides further evidence for being the cheesiest actor ever to grace the silver screen. And yet, I see all of his films. Go figure. Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye is worth checking out on video or DVD, when you can fast forward all of the romantic rubbish and enjoy the hilarious dance numbers.

Over a long holiday weekend, unable to escape the confines of their sorority house, a handful of unsuspecting girls are left behind to enjoy the quiet sanctuary. Brazil. Beautiful women, pristine beaches, a friendly, open culture. Alex is accompanying his sister Bea and her best friend Amy for their first time abroad--young Americans who have come to exotic Brazil for fun, adventure and the promise of foreign pleasures. On a rickety bus rocketing up a twisting mountain road, they meet the beautiful Pru, who speaks the native language Portuguese, and Finn and Liam, in Brazil for the sole purpose of experiencing the beautiful Brazilian women they've heard so much about first hand. After enduring a harrowing bus crash which strands them in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, Alex, Bea, and their band of traveling companions attempt to salvage their day by seeking out a cabana bar on a nearby beach rather than wait an endless amount of time for the next bus to come by. The discovery of the beautiful and secluded beach gives way to a day in the sun and surf, an afternoon at the bar, and a night of exotic liquors and hot dancing with the locals. It's everything their vacation is supposed to be, until they wake up face down in the sand the following morning, drugged and robbed, their possessions gone, and the trace of very real danger in the air. The farther the group travels into this mysterious and isolated Brazilian community, the further they are from the possibility of escape--and the closer they come to the dark secret that waits for them in the lush jungle and underground caverns of the Brazilian jungle, and they must fight a primal battle for their lives in the most terrifying of all human traps.
