I saw such a IDE convertor for 2.5k with power adapter, but I thought it was too expensive for that price, I'll try to fetch it for 2k. Good backup solution, But wouldnt it be very slow?
Anusha
12-09-2006, 08:39 PM
Why would it be slow? USB 2.0 has 60MBps bandwidth.

Didnt know that fact, So cud we run it on the fly. Like playing games and using as another drive...
Anusha
12-09-2006, 08:53 PM
Well, better to use it for data and backups. It is definitely slower than native IDE or SATA, but not a great deal. Usually 20-25%, if the hard drive that is used is a very fast one.

Yeah, yeah. It's not that fast when sequential data reads/writes are concerned. Data transfer in USB 2.0 wouldn't come close to its theoretical limits. Not even half of it sometimes.
But since random access speed to the data is very low on hard drives, this bottlenecked interface speed will not really hurt there.
But you know, this hard drive supports Firewire too. If 1394b is concerned, you will hardly notice any difference between the native mode and the converted mode.

That's a great price. I couldn't find anything for even Rs.2500 either. But I didn't REALLY look for one. Just asked from here and there, because I'm not in a hurry to buy a converter. If I can sell my IDE hard drive, I wouldn't need one either, because I don't need to move data around. What I need the converter is to relief the IDE port from serving both the hard drive and the DVD burner.

Yes 50% in some places its 80-100%, No specific shop, an uncle of mine has a shop in Pettah, he referred me for a memory chip. Card reader I searchd around a bit. I think you already know what sort of a value shopper I am ! But if you need phone stuff, PSP, PS2, Xbox, MP4/MP3/DVD portables, console cartridges ...etc. I can recommend (not a referral) a place, which has good prices in Pettah.

How would you lose the burner? You better use it while the warranty lasts, so that if a problem comes up, it comes up before the warranty expires.

C4 1 47uf 25V Electrolytic Capacitor

U1 1 TDA1554 Two Channel Audio Amp Chip
MISC 1 Heatsink For U1, Binding Posts (For Output), RCA Jacks (For Input), Wire, Board
Notes
1. The circuit works best with 4 ohm speakers, but 8 ohm units will do.
2. The circuit dissipates roughly 28 watts of heat, so a good heatsink is necessary. The chip should run cool enough to touch with the proper heatsink installed.
3. The circuit operates at 12 Volts at about 5 Amps at full volume. Lower volumes use less current, and therefore produce less heat.
4. Printed circuit board is preferred, but universal solder or perf board will do. Keep lead length short.

http://aycu32.webshots.com/image/8031/2000449350551803102_rs.jpg
It didn't work when I plugged the hard drive as it is. I had to change the drive mode to Cable Select (the other options are Master and Slave). Once I did that, it was automatically identified as a USB drive by Vista (so would XP). However, I have to say, the portability is not as easy as a Portable USB hard drive because you have to have the power cable as well. But, since I didn't buy it for that, I'm fine with it. I bought it to remove my PATA HDD from PC and so that I don't have to open the case when someone comes with his har drive to get some files from me.
