AVG is good for a free anti-virus. But its detection rates are lower than NOD32, Symantec Antivirus, Kaspersky etc.

But the purpose of a virus guard is to stop such catastrophes no? If you think like that, you are better off not using a virus guard. At least your PC would be fast for a couple of days

AFAIK, it uses too much resources and slows down even when deleting a folder full of files (this was one of my experiences)

I use NOD32, or nothing on Vista as well as XP. I can live without a virus guard in XP, but when other people plug their flash drive, I don't want to get any viruses they have.

ESET s & Norton s reliability ve been doubted by a certain virus which is detected by other anti-virus software but these.. but anyways.. this is a seldom event as ESETs database is constantly updated n am sure as of now there would be a patch which would fix dis prob...

You know, there could be false positives. One virus guard could wrongfully identify a harmless executable file as a virus, if the heuristics engine is not powerful.

norton, macafe and avg. norton internet for internet so normaly use to avg for best.

HishamZz

NOD32 seldomly shows false positives but it bypassing this virus which is deemed moderate is a real risky business.. either its heuristics use a algorithm which aint proficient @ detecting this new-variant of the virus or else the virus effectively disables its heuristics...

and another cause 4 concern man.. most files are now packed n encrypted .. leave da encryption part.. packed ... makin it harder n @ times slower 4 al da anti-virus to detect any viruses...

As far as I know, NOD32 has the best heuristics engine of all virus guards. Its signature database is not as strong as Kaspersky's though.

The only way to be safe is disconnecting the PC from the networks and not plugging in any external storage devices.

However, if you use a limited user account in XP rather than an Admin account, it will make XP more secure. You can always run your "trusted" software using "run as".

NORTANT CORPARATION edition is the best

Well.. its fair to say I ve not been attacked by a single virus after da installation of ESET Nod32.. using a seperate profile rather than the admin.. rootkits though got backdoors via virus progs so wanna see how rootkit based viruses start developing..

Disconnecting PC from all forms of external communication makes it pointless having a PC in the first place.. lol ;-)

Wut I love above eset though is that it prevents malware as well as viruses.. thus not needing a anti-spyware software..

ESET + ZoneAlarm = A+Secure System lol...

By Admin I didn't mean the local Administrator account. I meant a profile with Administrator level previldges. And I also didn't say that this will stop all the viruses. It will certainly help up to a great extent. I have heard people debating about that fact that using XP's limited user account without a virus guard is safer than using an Admin account with a virus guard. No comments from me there though :D :D

I was kidding.

I use Ad-aware to check for spyware once in a while. But I don't run it in realtime.

ESET + ZoneAlarm = A+Secure System lol...

I don't like ZoneAlarm because it made things slower. I don't know about the latest version though. Vista's Firewall is good enough for me. Even when I was on XP, I still didn't use a 3rd party firewall.

HishamZz
12-10-2006, 11:28 AM
Theoratically having a limited XP account is deemed safer as trojans n viruses cant install anythin in that profile due to reduced privileges even prescribed for applications.. that is .. if it is configured correctly.. but nah.. thats overkill security for me.. just a normal Admin account a decent anti-virus/firewall s more dan enough...

Ya use Windows Firewall?? No comment bout it cuz I never am a big fan of microsoft products.. lol...

ZoneAlarm pro is quite good dude.. Another one do exists called Sygate Personal Firewall but it is far more complicated.. Zonealarm though does a far better job for me.. n I ve not experienced a hefty resource load..

When you have a firewall in Windows, why would I need a new one. Sure, it doesn't let you take control of if much, and XP's FW doesn't stop outbound connections (Vista's does) but I don't need that much blocking.
