The Examinations Department is short of 5,000 teachers to mark Advanced Level examination papers. Friday was the deadline for teachers to send in applications to mark papers.

Examinations Commissioner Anura Edirisinghe said some 7,000 teacher applications had been received so far, and that the balance number would be filled by examiners registered with the department.

“The department has some 20,000 registered examiners. They are bound to serve the department, whenever the department calls for their services.” Mr. Edirisinghe said.

Mr. Edirisinghe said the registered examiners would be contacted through letters addressed to residences and schools.

Meanwhile, Ceylon Teachers’ Union president Joseph Stalin said that teachers would not apply for exam paper-marking assignments as long as anomalies persisted in teacher salaries. “The deadline for exam paper marking applications has been extended since May 31, but teachers are not applying because their salary problem remains unresolved,” he said.

Mr. Stalin said President Mahinda Rajapaksa had invited teacher unions to submit recommendations regarding salary anomalies to the President’s Secretary, Lalith Weeratunga, giving June 26 as a deadline. “However, even though teacher unions submitted recommendations in time to Mr. Weeratunga, no action has been taken so far,” Mr. Stalin said.

Ceylon Teachers Service Union general secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe questioned the wisdom of coercing persons into marking exam papers. “Forcing teachers to mark Advanced Level papers is unfair by the Advanced Level students,” he said.
