A'pura rocked by shootings, violence : turns into battle ground -several injured

With all propaganda campaigns for the August 23 PC polls for the Sabaragamuwa and North Central provincial councils ending midnight today, incidents of election-related violence , including shootings, have been reported today mainly from the Anuradhapura district which turned into battle field.

UPFA supporters who went to attack UNP chief ministerial candidate Maj.Gen. Janaka Perera election office at Harischandra Mawatha, Anuradhapura came under attack and gun shooting from UNP supporters at the office in which three persons were injured, one of them very seriously. Vehicles in which the UPFA candidates came were also damaged very badly, according to reports. They have been warded in the Anuradhapura hospital. The condition of one is serious. This incident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. It is reported that the UPFA supporters came to attack the UNP election office in A’Pura as retaliation for an attack on their Kekirawa officer early yesterday.

In another incident Minister Duminda Dissanayake's personal assistant was shot at in Eppawela and has been warded in the Anuradhapura district in a serious condition. He sustained gun shot injuries and now in a serious condition.

It is reported that the residence of Dr.John Pulle a UNP organizer also was attacked and damaged.

President’s Election Coordinator for Anuradhapura District Kithsiri Ganganath Gunawardena told the "Lanka-e-News" that the UPFA election offices in Kekirawa, Mihintalaae, Dambuttegama and another place came under attack from UNP supporters today. He said that UPFA supporters who sustained injuries were pulled into the office and severely beaten.

In another incident Street Drama team and Music Group of the UPFA came under attack from hoodlums headed by a UNP parliamentarian. The vehicles were also attacked and damaged. The musical instruments were snatched away by the attackers, it has been reported.
