Chip maker Marvell has come up with a iMito iM7 tablet pc reference design powered by its own Armada 600 chip. The tablet runs the latest Android 2.2 Froyo, has a 10 inch display, and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The prototype tablet is capable of playing back 1080p HD quality video and has support for 3D graphics acceleration. Of course, the whole point behind the move is to show off what the latest Marvell creation, the Armada 600 chip, is capable of. And it is this that forms the most interesting part of the story, because the tablet has been mighty impressive in its performance and seems to have an answer for anything thrown at it. Marvell is claiming the Armada 600 chip will have a clock speed of 1 GHz and will have ultra low power requirement characteristics.

The hardware bit of the tablet is yet to be set in stone as things are still being worked out. The Android 2.2 Froyo has also been tweaked to render better performance on the larger sized and higher resolution screen since the operating system has largely been conceived for use on smartphones. In the end, what turned out is an exemplary idea of what a iMito iM7 tablet pc should be.

The apps are working fine, response has been zippy, display is crisp, and the tablet has no qualms playing back a HD video simultaneously on its own screen along with an external display via an HDMI connection.

However, Marvell has ruled out diversifying into actually manufacturing tablet PCs and have stated they are content with producing the chips that goes into the making of these tablets. The chip maker has announced there will be at least a finished tablet PC up for display at the upcoming CES. The iMito iM7 tablet pc is certainly one to look out for. More so since by that time Google will have its tablet specific version of Android, the Gingerbread, up and running.

Visual Fan, a little known company that operates out of Brasov, Romania has come up with a new tablet PC – the Allview AllDro that will further add to the ever growing Android tablet crowd.

The iMito iM7 tablet pc is in the 7 inch category (one that is witnessing the majority of the action) and the company is not shying away from playing the price card. Each Allview AllDro is expected to cost €200 when it goes on sale next month which, needless to say, is a whole lot cheaper than the much hyped Samsung Galaxy Tab.

However, details of the Allview AllDro are scant at best. The only thing that we know of the tablet is that it would have a 800Mhz processor at it heart, 2 GB of internal memory, mini HDMI and USB ports as well as a microsd card slot that will allow for expansion of storage capacity to a maximum of 32 GB. The Allview AllDro right now can connect to the internet with only Wi-Fi, though the company has announced a 3G version is on the way. As for its battery life, company sources have revealed it will be good enough for 6 hours of continuous Android tablet pc operation with the Wi-Fi turned on, or 30 hours of music playback.

Also, the Allview AllDro will run the Android operating system, the exact version is yet to be revealed. The tablet will be manufactured in China as per specifications laid down by Visual Fan.

As for the company itself, Visual Fan had only started selling dual sim phones manufactured in China in 2008. All of its products carry the brand name ‘Allview’ and the Allview AllDro is the first attempt at aAndroid tablet pc device for the company.

So you thought the inclusion of a QWERTY keyboard in the main form factor was only restricted to the e-reader domain and won’t ever spill over to the tablet segment. In fact, e-readers too are being increasingly seen adopting a touchscreen approach with the most notable exception to this design trend is the Kindle which still sees the justification of having a full fledged keyboard below the main reading area even in the new and much improved Kindle 3.

But then, here is a Android tablet pc that is characterized by the presence of a QWERTY keyboard below the 7 inch display, something that would remind one of the Kindle DX. Its the Newpad NP711 tablet that has been brought forth by the Beijing based company Newsmy. This perhaps is also the first tablet device in recent times to feature a complete keyboard below the screen. This, while tablets are supposed to be slick devices with a touch sensitive interface and are seen as a replacement of notebook PCs but without a physical keyboard.

The tablet though manages to impress with its unconventional looks that is done up in an attractive shade of white. The screen can boast of a 4:3 aspect ratio and (SVGA) resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. Thing on the other side of it is however a bit less impressive though at the same time, there is enough to pull off a surprise or two, like the 1 GHz RK2818 processor from Rockchip that has earned a fair bit of respect through out the tech world.

However, the operating system is Android 2.1 when its the Android 2.2 Froyo that everyone is clamoring for as a bare minimum. The Newpad NP711 is capable of playing back 720P videos without any fuss and has excellent audio and video codec base built into it. While its not known how much of internal memory the Newpad NP711 come with by default, there is still the microSD cards route to jack up storage up to a maximum of 32 GB each time.

These apart, the Newpad NP711 can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or 3G and includes a USB 2.0 port and an accelerometer for automatic screen orientation changes. The 1600mAh li-ion battery ensures the Android tablet pc to continue operating for 6 hours Wi-Fi kept on all the time.

The Newpad NP711 however is unlikely to ever reach markets outside of China where its expected to go on sale soon. Pricing details has been kept under wraps as of now. In any case, it would be interesting to see if more tablet PC manufacturers adopt the Newpad NP711’s design theme that itself is classified under the ‘interesting and unconventional designs’ category.
