If your mobile is lost or stolen you must take necessary action as advised below to recover it or to make it unusable by other people.

In Sri Lanka you must buy mobile phone or Smartphone only from certified vendors with warranty card and purchase receipt. Never buy phones from unauthorized vendors or from people unknown to you.

Always keep those purchase papers and the phone box in a safe place.

Once you had bought the mobile phone or the Smartphone tell the seller to show you the IMEI number of the phone and check whether it is matches with the number on the box and the receipt.

To check the IMEI number they will press *#06# on your phone's keypad. Also you can check the compliance plate under the battery for the IMEI number.

In Sri Lanka TRC can get back your mobile phone with the assistance of the police, if you make the complaint in the following method.

Get your Mobile Phone IMEI and phone number.

Go to the nearest police station and make a complaint and get a copy of it.

Go to your mobile phone operator (like Dialog, Airtel, Mobitel or Hutch.) and lodge a complaint there.

Some time they may ask you to provide frequently used numbers from the phone.

If every thing is correct you can get your new SIM card too.

Then contact Sri Lanka (TRC) Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on telephone numbers, 2662215/16/22,

4514067 or 5376159 and make your complaint with the following.

Mobile Phone IMEI
Mobile Phone model Details
Mobile Number.
Police Complaint Report
What will happen after this?
Mobile phone operators will track the phone using the IMEI number even if they change another SIM card from another operator. If possible they will catch the thief and will return your mobile phone.
Other wise the phone will become permanently unusable.
